Shared Folders is Breaking Networking

Enabling and using Shared Folders is breaking the VM's networking briefly. For example, when I am connected to a VPN, I get disconnected from the VPN when I browse to my shared folders. I have uninstalled and reinstalled VMWare Workstation Pro 12.5.7 build 5813279, but the problem persists. My host is Windows 10. My VM are Windows 7 and Windows 10. The problem persists whether I am using NAT or Bridged networking.

I cannot figure out how to fix this. Any help would be appreciated.

If you want a reliable way to exchange files with host and guest use standard Windows filesharing.
Shared folders may be convenient but they are not a reliable solution and every new WS-release fixes some bugs but comes with new ones.

It's actually not the file sharing itself that I'm trying to fix, it's the networking issue. The networking seems to be "bouncing" which is especially noticeable when I access files on the host using any method.
