I heard that once you upgrade to vROps 6.6, you will no longer be able to use Windows based remote collectors.
Is this true? Do vROps 6.6 remote collectors have to be installed on a linux based system?
I can't imagine this being the case, is it true?? I tried to look it up but I was not able to confirm either way.
Thanks
According to the 6.6 documentation, it alludes to the possibility of using remote collectors on other operating systems. However, vROps 6.4 appears to be the last version that features a Windows installation package on MyVMware. The release notes to 6.6 and 6.6.1 do not mention anything about removal of remote collectors on Windows. However, in each version's documentation since 6.4, it continually removes supported cluster types when talking about remote collector nodes.

Based on this, they imply (but do not state) that Windows-based remote collectors are no longer offered. I've reached out to Sunny and Iwan to get confirmation, but my personal thought is anything other than a virtual appliance is being phased out, gone already, or will be entirely soon.
Yes, Windows RCs are no longer available.
VMware have been a bit quiet about this one but appliance is where everything is going so it made sense.
Soon they will be porting vROPs & RCs to the new Photon OS based appliance so stay tuned for that in a later release too!
Hi, Graham. Can you state the source of your information on this point? The writing is obviously on the wall, but I'm just curious if you heard this through official channels and, if so, what or who they were.
Hi Chip, VMware GSS is the source. Validated by the fact that you can no longer download the Windows RC at that version. I'll ask for official note / KB but all makes sense to me based on this and some information i was also given a while back abut VMware moving away from the Windows versions of vROps.

Hope this helps
Thanks for the additional information, Graham. If you are in contact with GSS about this, a KB article with an official statement would be very helpful to point people in the future. This trend of silently removing functionality without saying a word is not good for anyone.
I've just had a look at the release notes for 6.5 and it does say that Windows Installations are no longer supported. It doesn't explicitly say RC but the fact that it says "Installations" implies all types of installations.
Note: vRealize Operations Manager 6.4 was the final version of the product to support Microsoft Windows installations. If you are running windows based vRealize Operations Manager 6.4, do a fresh OVA installation for vRealize Operations Manager 6.5.

And in the 6.4 release notes, warning was given that it was the last version to support Windows Installs

Hope this helps to clarify!
Thank you for that. I totally missed it when searching for "remote collector." This is good enough for me.
