There are lot of linux distros available for lab testing. I'm using DSL DSL information  extensively for a multi site lab setup on a nested infra and it works flawlessly for the most of the use case. One small tip which  i want to share additionally is to take a OVF after deployment of first instance of these VM's . Most of them demand to go through the few initial setup commands to ensure O/S&VM is running fine.So that repeated process can be reduced with OVF. Let me know if you need any further help.
