Can ESXi 5.5 run on an HP DL380 G5 server??

This is assuming one uses the HP custom ESXi build.

Thank you...

When VMware made vSphere 5.5 generally available HP also published its own customized version of the ESXi 5.5 installation ISO including HP drivers and tools. so you will have to use a customized iso , i searched for you and i hope this link will help you out :

Hi Tom,

As per HPs OS compatibility matrix vSphere 5.5 is not supported on DL 380 G5.

You can visit the following link which has the supported OS and server models:

So far everyone except zXi_Gamer has not understood my question.

I did not ask about VMware support or the HCL.

I asked if vSphere 5.5 would RUN on a HP DL380 G5.

Please re-read my original post.

The intended installation would use the most current HP vSphere installer which contains drivers etc.

Thank you...

Not sure if you've got the answer yet.

I have vSphere 5.5 running on 2x HP DL380 G5 one with 32GB RAM the other with 16GB.

Both servers have 2x 5160 procs.

One was done as an upgrade from 5.1.

The other was a fresh install using HPs ISO (it also works from the VMWare ISO).

Make sure you upgrade the firmware on the server first especially the Broadcom NICs firmware.

(NOTE the HP SUM may not upgrade the Broadcom firmware correctly & you may need to download it separately).

Hope this helps

Tom

ESxi 5.5 gets installed over DL 380 G5. But not officially supported by VMware or by HP as production servers.

Malleyne: what is the max number of CPUs you can provision a VM with?

(I'm considering putting 5.5 on a DL380 G5) and the VM I need to create must have 6 cpus.

Thanks.

hi,

With vSphere 5.5 you can go upto 64 vCPUs per VM.

You can use 6 vCPUs for your VM

Hi sreeve29,

depending on number of physical CPU/ Core and depending on VMware vSphere edition:

Free/ Essentials/ Essentials Plus/ Standard - max. 8 vCPU/ VM

Enterprise - max. 32 vCPU/ VM
Enterprise Plus - max. 64 vCPU/ VM

For 6 vCPU need 2x pCPU with quad Core

To run ESXi 5.5 on the DL 380 G5 server you must enable the following options in the BIOS

ADVANCED OPTIONS

1) Vitrual isntall DISK (ACTIVE)

PROCESSOR OPTIONS

1) NO-EXECUTE MEMORY PROTECTION (ACTIVE)

2) INTEL (R) VITTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY (ACTIVE)

GREETINGS. Smiley Happy

The processor options are required on all Intel servers running vSphere.

Most blogs and KBs etc. about running vSphere on HP say to disable the Virtual Install Disk -- why do you say to enable it???

Thank you, Tom

For some tests I made, if not active, the server takes a snapshot purple warning that can not proceed with the installation if you have active since virtualization of CPU should disable it.

Upgraded my 5.1 to 5.5 GA without any problems on my DL380 G5.

Kept CPU virtualization enabled in BIOS, just as it had been before.

Had already updated System ROM to latest before I installed 5.1 earlier.

If you are using HP customize image for this HP server then it will surely support the ESXi.

You dont need to worry about that.

Hope, it clears your query.

Thanks
