RDM as DR for Physical Server

Hello,

I have a MS SQL server running on physical server, with database stored in a SAN storage. For the DR site, the MS SQL server is preferred to be a VMware VM. By leverage storage replication, the database can be replicated to DR site in storage level. Is it possible to use RDM to map that to a VM in DR site directly?

Any comment, idea or suggestion are welcome.

Thanks,

Tony

I'd basically say yes, that should work.

You may however need to make the replica writable (from the storage level) on the target site, before it can be used.

Thanks Andre!

For this scenario, does RDM need to be physical compatibility mode?

One more question, is physical RDM read/write behaviour to a LUN same as a physical server? For example, may I remap a LUN from a VM (physical RDM) to another physical server?

RDM's (virtual or physical mode) use the guest's native file system, i.e. the LUN contents are the same no matter whether it is presented to a physical, or a virtual server..

There may be situations where physical vs. virtual mode matters (e.g. for MSCS), but that's not related to the filesystem/data on the LUN.
