VMware NSX Features and Advantages for implementation

What are main advantages of NSX in Virtualization? Especially when you have your good Physical Infrastructure with all necessary equipment such as Routers, Switches, Firewall etc

I need some key features with advantages in detail to get justification for NSX Implementation.

Please share your experience and Knowledge.

Hi,

NSX has 3 big use-cases: Network Automation, Security on a micro level and Disaster Recovery on multiple locations. You can find out more about them on vmware.com: Network Virtualization and Security Platform – NSX | VMware

I would actually suggest you contact your VMware rep to talk through the best use-case for your environment and how you can make the justification work.

Below are some of the key benefits which I would like to highlight.

  • VMware NSX is hardware independent & it works on underlying IP infrastructure.
  • It reproduces the physical network model in software.
    • It helps in reducing the requirement of the physical hardware network devices performing routing ,switching, VPN, firewall & load balancing.
    • All the components which are available in hardware, NSX is providing them in software.
    • With software components , we don't need to worry about the end of life or hardware ageing in which we need to physically replace the existing hardware with the latest.
    • Since it is just a software we need to upgrade it to the latest version whenever required.
  • It offers a greater flexibility in deploying your network faster without having much dependency on any physical infrastructure.
    • The network provisioning time is reduced from days to few minutes.

Killer Feature in VMware NSX – Micro Segmentation: (Security)

  • Micro-segmentation is the feature of NSX which provides granular security policies or basic firewalling rules at the vNIC level.
  • Each VM has its own firewall – A Virtual Firewall.
  • Micro-segmentation is achieved via the Distributed Firewall the component of NSX, which focuses on East-West access and the VMware NSX Edge firewall which focuses on the North-South traffic.
  • Before any packets are forwarded from the virtual machines, the packets are checked by the firewall configured at the vNIC level.

In addition to this, I found the below link very useful. Have a view at this.

Can some one suggest which Cisco UCS Rack Mount Server is good to install NSX 6.2 and vCenter 6.6 Together? And how many Physical Servers should be there? What are the Spec like Core and RAM Required?

Thanks,

NSX is agnostic to any hardware sever including Cisco UCS. The model or the size of the server depends mainly on the size of your deployment.

Refer to the sizing in the below from the VMware KB article. The sizing needs to be based on your deployment size.

NSX 6 Documentation Center

Also any reason why are planning to use NSX 6.2 instead of 6.3.

Minimum recommendation is to have 3 servers, but if you are planning to deploy for enterprise network consider 5 servers (3 for Management POD + 2 for Edge POD)

At the Moment We have 3 UCS Chassis 5108 so total 24 Blades (B200-M4). We might Increase to 4 More Chassis in next 2 years. So let start with sizing with current which are 24 Blades and maximum can to 48 Blades in Future.

Currently we have vCenter 6.0 Standard and we will upgrade to 6.5. We don't have NSX at the moment but we are planning to go as well. On storage side we are using local disk on every blades (1.2TB x 2) but off course we will consider to go for Centralized Storage.

So with current 24 Blades and keep NSX as option for future plan. How many Physical UCS Rack Mount Servers do we need ?
