Upgrade to Fusion 8.5.8 messed up the application icon in Finder and Dock

I upgraded to Fusion 8.5.8 on macOS Sierra, and it's working great, but the application icon in Finder and in the dock is the generic application icon and not the VMware icon. The strange part is that if I create a folder in Applications and move the application to that folder, then the icon is restored to the normal VMware icon. If I move the application back to the Applications folder, then the icon is changed back to the generic application icon.

I tried deleting the application and reinstalling it, but the icon is still the generic application icon.

I've also tried deleting ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.finder/Cache.db and then rebooting, but that did not help any.

This is the icon that is showing in the dock:

Apple has implemented a security feature starting with El Capitan called "System Integrity Protection" SIP for short. As long as SIP is activated, it won't allow you to change any Apple application icons. Contact Apple for support.

You could perhaps try this (not guaranteed to work):

touch /Applications/App.app
touch /Applications/App.app/Contents/Info.plist
killall Dock

(might need sudo for the first two commands): where App is VMware\ Fusion...
