What vSphere Essentials 6.5 backup / restore VMs are available?

In follow Up - how simple and quick would it be to take a backup/snapshot made on failed hardware - and restore it to other hardware.

I am building a Windows 2012 R2 Essentials server and considering what benefit vSphere / EXSi would be.   I don't plan on loading multiple servers as this point.   However, having a second machine available to quickly transfer / relocate to could be possible.

Thank you for your time and input.

With VMware vSphere Essential you don't have that much to chose from but if you upgrade to
VMware vSphere Essentials Plus you can take Advantage of:

1. VMware High Availability (VMHA)
When a physical server goes down or loses all network connectivity, VMHA steps in and migrates the virtual guest machines off of that server and onto another server. This way, the virtual machines can be up and running again in just the time that it takes them to reboot. (At least 2 ESXi host systems)

2. vSphere Data Protection (VDP)
vSphere Data Protection is a backup and recovery solution designed for vSphere environments. can be deployed to Virtual Machine File System (VMFS), Network File System (NFS) and Virtual SAN datastores. Virtual machines can be restored to a different location and/or renamed as part of the restore process.

Raul,

I appreciate your answer and your time.    I understand the "Plus" is more powerful and can automate the process with little down time.   However, that is not worth $5,000 in my circumstances.

So I am left - trying to determine - if the "Essentials and Esxi" are of value to me.    They way I see it - if I don't have to ability to easily perform regular automated backup in some fashion and quickly restore it  to the same or different machine - there is little reason to pursue it.

Your answer indicated "you don't have much to choose from".    I take it to mean the capability to do the backups and an automated fashion and relocate if necessary is not there.

Once again I thank you for your answer and time.

So where are you building your Server 2012R2? Is it on physical or virtual? Sorry your post is not very clear. How many physical hardware do you have? You can also consider Essentials Plus Kit Term at half the cost of Essentials Plus VMware vSphere Essentials Kits - Official VMware Store

What are you trying to achieve? Or what are your requirements that you are trying to meet? Consider all the benefits you will gain from Essentials Plus. Such as ability to live migrate Server 2012 between physical servers, Server 2012 automatically restarting in another physical server in the event the one it was on cashes, backup solution to backup your Server 2012 (what are you using to back up your server now?) and several other feature sets.

Here are some of the features that you get with Essentials Plus

  • vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi)
  • vCenter Server Essentials
  • vSphere Data Protection
  • vSphere High Availability (HA)
  • vSphere vMotion
  • Cross Switch vMotion
  • vSphere vShield Endpoint
  • vSphere Replication

Keep in mind that VDP is being discontinued after vSphere 6.5

See: https://www.vmware.com/content/dam/digitalmarketing/vmware/en/pdf/products/vsphere/vmw-vdp-eoa-faqs....

Existing users can migrate to Dell's Avamar.

So as a general interest follow up question:
