Hi,
I'm facing a prettty annoying issue with my MacBook Pro 2016 (15", with Radeon Pro 460 graphics): when I install a "simple" Windows 10 VM, I can install the VMWare tools but it constantly get crashes when I try to do so on my "Bootcamp VM".
I assumed it was a graphic issue and tried not to install that driver but it still crashes.
Has anyone got the same problem ?
Hi,
Well in that case it indeed starts to sound very much like a problem with the display driver.
What happens if you disable 3D?
Does it still crash then?

Hi,
Are you using the latest VMware Fusion (version 8.5.8) ?

Yep, the issue existed with the former version, I hoped upgrading to 8.5.8 would help but it wasn't better.
OK, in your original reply you mention that it is Windows 10 1603, AFAIK there are less problems with the older Windows 10 as with the very latest one, so upgrading that is more likely to introduce more issues as to resolve them.
You suspected the graphics adapter, I personally suspect the thinprint part, eg the printing solution that allows you to directly print via macOS.

Thanks for your help, I'll take a look to that ASAP.
I thought of the graphic drivers because it seemed to crash when installing it.
I edited my post as I realised all my W10 VMs were 1603 versions, not only my Bootcamp's one, but the "true" VMs doesn't have the same issues.
So I tried without print driver and it crashed again.
After, I tried to install drivers one by one and it crashes each time I choose SVGA driver.
Worse, resolution has changed to something that looks like 800x600, icons and windows are so big that it's now unusable... 😕
Edit: I tried to update graphics drivers using Windows Update, it crashes too... maybe not a VMWare issue after all, but I may not be the only one to have the issue... -_-

That's exaxctly what I understood when I realized that (I should have thought of that before -_- )
I deactivated 3D graphics acceleration and I could install the driver from Windows Update (it says it's a VMWare driver so I guess it's the same as VMware tool's).
When It's deactivated everything runs fine (resolution changes with VMWare's window size, I can use -at last !- copy/paste, etc.) but as soon as I reactivate it, the VM can't even boot. It restart again and again.
Hi,
Ok, well being able to use the bootcamp VM is at least a start.
Of course it should be possible to also use the VM while having 3D enabled.
If I am reading the specs correctly then besides the Radeon graphics adapter there's also a Intel HD Graphics 530.
I'm not exactly sure how good the specs are on the Intel, but I would assume that it is 3D capable.
So next thing I would try in your case is to try with 3D enabled and then select for "Don't use high performance graphics"
It might also be interesting to open a support case with VMware as they might have another solution or can tell you more about it if it is a known issue.
To do so please go to: Fusion Support and open a ticket at File a Support Request

Hi,
There's a Intel HD 530 integrated too, you're right
Anyway, I tried to activate 3D with all options (low perf and high perfs, in case that only one of the 2 cards were used with those options, Intel HD and Radeon separately), with & without high resolution for Retina display, in every case it crashes. As you suggest I'll open a support case but I won't complain as I already got the functionnalities I need to work easily
Thnaks again for your help !
Being able to work alleviates quite a bit of pain.
There's ways to select the cards to use by editing the vmx file and setting the DX11 vendor ID, see:
Re: Make VMWare Workstation use my Nvidia card?
Then there's a way to use the older D3D rendering instead of DX11 rendering:
mks.enableD3DRenderer = TRUE
mks.enableDX11Renderer = FALSE
Which might help too.
But... really would be best to know what is causing the crash.
