Problem to mount a USB stick

Hi

I installed VMware Workstation Pro 12.5.6 build 5528349 on Windows 7 SP1 64 bit.

In all VMs, when I try to mount a USB stick, the The connection for the USB device 'Kingston USB DISK 2.0' was unsuccessful. Driver error. message is displayed. I also tried to change USB port but nothing changes.

So, how do I fix this?

Thanks

Check if it's caused by power management

You can try if the following steps work around the issue

1. Go to device manager on the host

2. Right click on the failing device

3. Click on the 'Power Management' tab

4. Uncheck 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power

If the above does not work for you, try connect the device to one of the back pane ports which usually directly connect to the root hub and has sufficient power

Thanks,

Lance

I've tried everything you've recommended me to do and I also updated Workstation to version 12.5.7 but my problem has not disappeared.

Now, what can I do?

Thanks

Attach the vmware.log to your next reply. It may tell you what is wrong.

Have you already analyzed my log files?

So, what can I do to solve the problem?

Your vmware.log does not contain meaningful USB logs. You can turn it on by adding the following line to the configuration file (.vmx) of the VM when the VM is off

usb.analyzer.enable = "TRUE"

From the log file you uploaded, you seemed using UHCI. Try to change VM -> Settings -> USB controller -> USB compatibility to 2.0 or 3.0 and try it again

If the Kingston one is the only device not working, the possible cause may be that the device does not come back after the port its connecting is reset. We actually had a similar report on that Kingston device before as well.

Thanks,

Lance

My problem only appeared with the last two Workstation builds.

However, I modified the vmx file and now I attach the log files.

Thanks

Hi,

I've gone through the log file you provided. It seemed the connection failed at the very first beginning where the USB traffic did not even start.

You can check if you can still see the Kingston device on the host and still working. If so, it means the device was never disconnected from the host.

If the device disappears on both host and guest, it means the device was ever disconnected from the host and trying to connect to the guest but failed due to some errors.

I guess your case falls into the first one, and still suspect it's caused by the power management.

  Quoted from another post

There is a "USB selective suspend setting" under "USB settings" in "Change advanced power settings" in Powercfg.cpl for each individual plan if you click on "Change plan settings". By default it is "Enabled" even for "Plugged In" in "High performance plan"

In theory, setting this to "Disabled" in the Power Management plan setting should affect all USB devices to not suspend itself to save power.

Please give it a try and see if it resolves your issue.

Thanks,

Lance

On the host, the USB stick works correctly.

On the host and the guest, I disabled the energy savings of USB.

So how does it never work again?

Thanks
