AppStack Issue - Grammarly Application

Hi All,

I've installed an application on our AppVol desktop called Grammarly. It works just fine during testing after installation in the AppVol desktop. I've rebooted numerous times and its still working. Once I finalize the package and assign it does it stop working. If I check the folder to see where it was installed (%localappdata%\Grammarly) it is missing. It is also no longer in Word or Outlook as an Add-On but it is listed in the Add Remove Programs list.

Can anyone figure out why this is happening upon finalization of the appstack?

The same thing happens if you try and install it using an writable volume, I think the folder is excluded, but I haven't been able to figure it out.

Anything related to user settings i not cached in an Appstack. So all information i the c:\User directory (which Localapppdata is a part of) or located in the HKCU registry key is not sequenced.

You could try and use a different installation location. Any vendor installing an application in your profile should reconsider their installation process (just my 2 cents). They either have no idea how windows works or try to bypass the fact that you normally need to be an administrator to install an application.

If you do need to have some info in those specific folders or registry kees just add it to the startup.bat file on the appstack during sequecing. You can execute any command you would like to. Keep in mind though it will be executed during logon which might extend logon times.

Ray, what would I do in the startup.bat script? Install the application? Or basically before doing the script find which registry entries were modified for Grammarly and export them as well as well copying the data folder to a network location. Then when I modify the script I tell it to import the reg keys and to copy the folder to the localappdata folder?

Or is there an easier way?

If the application is nothing more than files being copies into the profile space and registry keys being created I would suggest looking at either UEM or GPO's to copy the files and import the registry settings, don't use Appvolumes for that.

On the other hand, I would contact the vendor and ask them to create an application installer that puts the files on the C:\Program Files and reg keys in the HKLM (as any good application does) so you don't need to fiddle around that much with providing an application to the user.

I found this today.   It may help get the install out of the localuserpath.

I know that this is a fairly old thread, but in case you are still having problems with this, did you try using the "/fastforallmode" switch when running the installer?  I have grammarly deployed in my environment this way and everything is working fine.
