Baber,

Yes. As per VMware, vRealize Log Insight is licensed on a per operating system instance (OSI) basis, which is defined as any server, virtual or physical, with an IP address that generates logs, including network devices and storage arrays.

For example in an environment with 1 vCenter and 10 ESXi hosts.

  • One can be used per vCenter (1 used)
  • One can be used per ESXi host (10 Used)
  • 14 remain for VMs, network devices, etc, etc.

thanks but for me appear this message with that license:

Log Insight is currently operating with a license that does not allow adding more than one vSphere host. In order to enable this functionality, you will need to purchase a full-feature license for Log Insight.

now i just add one vcenter that it contain 5 esxi host now my question is :

1 - can i add 24 esxi host ?

I noticed that I am also receiving the same message; however, I am able to add up to 25 hosts/devices. If you have 1 vCenter and 5 hosts, you would have 19 remaining devices to add. You can monitor Active OSI's under the License tab.

Yes you can add one vCenter and 19 hosts. OSI: means a single installation of an operating system on a non-virtualized physical server or Virtual Machine.

The steps to configure ESXi to send logs to Log Insight (or any syslog destination) are described here - https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=20033...

Configuring syslog on ESXi (2003322) | VMware KB

Basically you need to run this command on each ESXi host - To configure remote syslog using TCP on port 514: esxcli system syslog config set --loghost='tcp://10.11.12.13:514'

Where 10.11.12.13 is the IP of your log insight instance.

Thanks.

baber,

- above you quoted why you can't add vcenters: "Log Insight is currently operating with a license that does not allow adding more than one vSphere host. In order to enable this functionality, you will need to purchase a full-feature license for Log Insight."

- as for adding esx servers as simple log sources: Yogita provided answer above

To check if that ESXi host is infact sending events to log insight. You can login to log insight- goto interactive analytics - click 'Add Filter' and select field source operator contains and the value will be the IP or FQDN of the ESXi host.

If you have Super Admin privileges you can also check on Admin\ Hosts page for the IP or FQDN of the ESXi host to check if that host is sending logs to log insight.

i see hosts in admin page but my host (single esxi) not show in host   - I do not follow this statement. Do you mean to say you see other hosts on this page but not the ESXi hosts where you configured it to send events to LI ?

If yes then have you tried this option - login to log insight- goto interactive analytics - click 'Add Filter' and select field source operator contains and the value will be the IP or FQDN of the ESXi host. ??

Have you tried tcp instead of udp? If not please try it. If that does not work either then this will need to be looked at over webex.

This is not the right community for ESXi or vSphere issues, please try in those groups. I think your original query about the license has been answered. Can you please mark this as answered and open a new question for the ESXi issue you have?

Thanks.
