Workstation 11 - install error 29141

Hi

I cannot install VMware Workstation 11 on my Windows 8.1 x64 laptop.

When I run the installer it stops with the error: "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 29141."

I have tried with two different installers. Both of the installers work on another computer.

If I extract the package and run the MSI installer with logging parameter, I can see some more details in the log:

The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 29141. The arguments are: Vstor2 MntApi 2.0 Driver (shared)

MSI (s) (4C!34) [12:40:39:047]: Product: VMware Workstation -- The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 29141. The arguments are: Vstor2 MntApi 2.0 Driver (shared)

CustomAction VM_InstallVstor.9780576B_1174_42AC_86E1_51DC42DC62C6 returned actual error code 1603 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox)

Hyper-V was removed before trying to install VMware Workstation 11.

I cannot install Workstation 10 either.

Any help is very appreciated.

I found a solution on the problem.

In my %temp% folder I located the log file vminst.log where I found these lines

vieInstUtil: 03/05/15 12:28:59 VMInstService::CreateManager::ServiceName: vstor2-mntapi20-shared

vieInstUtil: 03/05/15 12:28:59 VMInstService::CreateManager::ImagePath: SysWOW64\drivers\vstor2-mntapi20-shared.sys

vieInstUtil: 03/05/15 12:28:59 VMInstService::CreateManager::DisplayName: Vstor2 MntApi 2.0 Driver (shared)

vieInstUtil: 03/05/15 12:28:59 VMInstService::CreateManager::StartType: 2

vieInstUtil: 03/05/15 12:28:59 VMInstService::CreateManager::ServiceName: vstor2-mntapi20-shared Type: 1 Start: 2

vieInstUtil: 03/05/15 12:28:59 VMInstService::CreateManager::ERROR_DUPLICATE_SERVICE_NAME The display name already exists in the service control manager database either as a service name or as another display name Error: 1078

I fired up PowerShell to list my services, but did not find any services with same service name or display name.

Then I looked in the registry under services, where I did found HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vstor2-mntapi10-shared

Containing a string with the display name “Vstor2 MntApi 2.0 Driver (shared)”

I deleted the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vstor2-mntapi10-shared and rebooted my computer. Now VMware Workstation installed without errors.

Did you verify the MD5 checksums of the downloaded installation files?

Are you running the setup as administrator? (right-click and select "Run as administrator")

MD5 checksum is ok. I am running the setup as administrator.

I have also tried to reinstall the prerequisites (C++ redistributable)

I've having the identical problem it seems on my Windows 7. I've followed the steps of checksum and running as admin also.

I'm assuming you've installed all updates on your system? I googled around for your particular problem and there is not many resources on said error, curious as to why it fails.. Can we see 8.1 error logs?

I ran into the same thing just now. In my case, vstor2-mntapi10-shared was left as a turd in the registry after uninstalling VMware Player.
