VMware Pro 12 crashes Windows 10 Host with BSOD

10 days ago, I got a new system with Windows 10. I installed the latest VMware 12.5.4 and everything worked fine until Friday. I remember that when I shut down my system Friday, Windows updated something.

Yesterday, Monday, suddenly my system crashes 6 times with BSODs. It took a while to understand that the crashes are related to the VMware.

This morning, I removed VMware 12.5.4 and installed version 12.1.1, but I wasn't able to install Windows 7 (failed driver) and it crashed my system once more.

Is there somebody who experiences the same?

Hi, Simone2017:

Would you mind upload the minidump files which locates at C:\Windows\minidump\ ? That would be helpful for us to analyse the issue, thanks very much

I just ran into the same issue with VMWare Workstation 12.5.4.

The guest VM Is ubuntu 16.10 and now everytime I start it up I get a BSOD with a stop code error.

I noticed today that workstation 12.5.5 was out.  I installed that and was able to get the ubuntu VM up and running again without the BSOD

I got the same crash with 12.5.5 after running for about an hour.

Think it started about v12.53 I keep on getting BSOD. Sometimes just using web browser outside of VM and when I click on a link, system crashes. Some times I get the crashes daily. Between this and the unable to connect to network shares error, getting so frustrated with this program.

This has been going on now for the last 3 releases and still no repair.

Pretty similar to my issue:

Except that your BSOD's are in the guest VMs and the TS here has his/her host crash.

Unless I'm reading it wrong.

No sir, it is my host crashing. On v12.5.3 I started crashing almost daily. Not so much anymore. Maybe twice a week if that. The thing was under 12.5.3 when it was happening once or twice a day and that was just a clean install of win10 pro on a brand new ssd. I thought I had an issue with the drive so I plugged in my older ssd.

My other main issue is that shared folders not working properly even with 12.5.5. Sometimes I get it to work and other times when I start VMware it tells me it cannot connect to shared folders and under file manager, my shared folder drive always has the red X on it. I can click on the shared folder, and then it opens up and the red X disappears. Just hate getting the notification that VMware cannot connect flashing in my face. This also started in v12.5.3.

I seen in another posting to use VMware tools from v12.5.2 and tried that turning off all notifications in update about checking for updates, but it always still showed VMware tools with the yellow mark on VMware tools on the taskbar, telling me that updates were available. So much for that fix.

Something changed drastically in v12.5.3 and newer that has been causing these issues. Never ever happened prior to this. Think it has something to do with VMware Tools itself.

Hi Kirm1955,

my reply was to rbuck117 Smiley Wink he already has a thread open about his issue where he complains about his VM's crashing.

It might all be related to vmware tools, maybe also for rbuck117, there certainly did happen something with vmware tools that is causing instability across the board.

When installing an older vmware tools, you will indeed get a toolbar icon in your guest that tells you you are using an old icon (with the yellow warning triangle).

While that isn't ideal, it is better as a host that crashes.

This is something that VMware has to fix, but so far I've not heard any confirmation that they have been able to reproduce the issue in house.

They are rather silent on the issue to be fair.

Brand new Dell XPS 8920.  VMWare Workstation 12.5.5 was the first software installed.  BSoD time and again.  Varies between memory errors and usb driver errors.  Updated all drivers on host, and still having issues.

Hi, derhally:

Thanks for your dmp file, and seems the mini dump file contains less information for us, so would you please upload the %SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP files? That would be helpful for us

to debug the crash, thanks very much!

Hi, dshorowitz:

Is your Bsod Host win10? Win10 would create kernel memory dump file when hit crash, so would you please upload the C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP files?  that would be helpful for us, thanks very much

Did someone find a solution for this? I am having the same issue on a Windows 10 x64 running VMware Workstation 12 version 12.5.7.

Hi, afagund:

Would you please check if there is kernel memory dump file generated in C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP files when Win10 BSOD?  If yes, i think the dump file is helpful for us to debug the issue.

Hi yanw,

Were you able to open and analyze the dump file? I am not able to use the product due this issue at this moment. Appreciate any help on this.

Regards,

Andre

HI, I have the same problem with the host running Windows 10 x64 and VMWare Workstation 12.5.5 Pro (build 5234757). I worked perfectly and a couple of days ago I get a BSOD multiple times a day. I attached the dump file.

I tried VMWare Workstation 12.5.7 Pro but the problem doesn't dissapear. Maybe Microsoft did an update that clashed with VMWare Workstation?

I've attached the minidump file.

Please give a solution asap.

Thank you.

I have the same problem, Win10 x64 and 12.5.7 many BSOD the last two weeks, but only when a certain vm is open. I can open two other VMs and no problem but one particular Win7 VM will crash the host every time. Here is my Memory Dump file too in case anyone is interested.  Thanks
