Migrating vCenter Server 5.5 for Windows to vCenter Server Appliance with SRM 5.8.1

Hi,

I'm in the planning stages of moving to 6.5 and was wondering if anyone has completed the following:

  1. Migrate vCenter Server 5.5 for Windows to vCenter Server Appliance 6.5
  2. Upgrade SRM 5.8.1 to 6.0 to 6.1 then 6.5

We have 2 Production Sites and can have SRM out for the day while we do all the upgrades as SRM 6.0/6.1 isn't supported on 5.5 or 6.5, but we don't want to use it in this state, just simply go through the upgrade requirements to get us to 6.5.

My plan at the moment is:

  1. vCenter Server Site A
  2. Update Manager (part of 5.5 Windows to 6.5 Appliance upgrade
  3. vCenter Server Site B
  4. Update Manager (part of 5.5 Windows to 6.5 Appliance upgrade
  5. SRM 5.8.1 to 6.0.x to 6.1.x to 6.5 Site A
  6. SRM 5.8.1 to 6.0.x to 6.1.x to 6.5 Site B
  7. ESXi Hosts
  8. Tools

Any input or suggestions would be greatly welcomed!

Thanks

This is the path you need to take As far as I can tell When looking at the Interopability matrix. This applies to even when using the vcenter migration tool.

Upgrade vcenter from 5.5 to 6.0 u3

upgrade srm 5.8.1 to 6.1.2.

Upgrade vcenter from 6.0u3 to 6.5 u1

Upgrade SRM from 6.1.2 to 6.5.1
