Workstation 12.5.5 crashes immedeately when trying to connect to ESXi 5.5 server

Workstation 12.5.5 Pro (12.5.5 build-5234757) running on openSuSE 42.2 Leap. Trying to connect to a remote ESXi 5.5 server crashes Workstation immedeately.

Connecting to this ESXi 5.5 server using previous version of Workstation 12 (12.2..) worked without problems.

Any ideas ?

Did anything ever become of this? I am having the same problem - openSUSE Leap 42.2, Workstation 12.5.3 and up crashes when connecting to a VMware host (I only tried 5.5). If I downgrade to Workstation 12.5.2, it works.

On the console, it says:

Unexpected signal: 6.

VMware Workstation Error:

VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (vmui)

Unexpected signal: 6.

A log file is available in "/tmp/vmware-KHolloway/vmware-ui-22633.log".

You can request support.

To collect data to submit to VMware support, choose "Collect Support Data" from the Help menu.

You can also run the "vm-support" script in the Workstation folder directly.

We will respond on the basis of your support entitlement.

The "interesting" part (to me) of the log is:

This also is affecting me.  I just did an update, with a kernel update, and now cannot connect to server.  My log file is similar to those already posted.

****Edit: I just did uninstalled and reinstalled everything(vmware) and verified the additional kernel files were also installed.  Does look like something in the network config is causing the issues.  I am getting SSL handshake errors.

I'm having the same issue.  Has anyone found a solution?

I have not, other than using an older version (12.5.3, I think).

I would really like to see some action on this. At least several people are having this problem. Is VMware aware of this issue?

I got the same problem like described here. So what to do. Can anyone encourage vmware to solve this?

Any progress in this question would really be appreciated.

I hate to do this but me too. I have the same problem and the same error messages in the log file as other users in this thread and I'm running the current Workstation Pro release on openSUSE 42.2 (fully updated). Is there any update on a cause or resolution for this problem.

Sorry fenice to ask, but if you are running the PRO version wouldn't it be possible to get direct support from VMWARE

as it might be suggested at the end of the log file from a crashed run:

Unfortunately they want you to pay for support even though you have a fully licensed version of Workstation Pro.  Numerous users have this problem since 12.5.5, is there any resolution, hints, anything?

I have the same problem.

OS: openSUSE Leap 42.2

VMware version:  VMware Workstation 12 Pro 12.5.7 build-5813279

Connect to vCenter 6.5

kernel: 4.4.70-18.9-default

I bought workstation pro for connect to vCenter, wish VMware could fix this as soon as possible.

At least it seems to be a problem with the version of libcurl, as I can see

in one of the installation logs:

| appLoader| I125: System libcurl.so.4 has OpenSSL version OpenSSL/1.0.2j, ours is OpenSSL/1.0.2k.

| appLoader| I125: System libcurl.so.4 has version 7.37.0 (need 7.51.0) and has been compiled with c-ares support (SSL compatibility? yes).

| appLoader| I125: Marking libcurl.so.4 node as SYSTEM.

I don't understand why libcurl in this case is used from the system instead

from the lib shipped with vmware and I think this is a bug in vmware.

Nevertheless it is possible to encourage vmplayer to use its own libraries

including the shipped version of libcurl if you run

# VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_LIBS=force

# vmplayer

which works for me.

To make it more convinient I renamed vmpayer and created a new wrapper script

with VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_LIBS set:

mv /usr/bin/vmplayer /usr/bin/vmplayer.org

vi /usr/bin/vmplayer

#!/bin/bash

export VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_LIBS=force

/usr/bin/vmplayer.org $*

This may not be a problem with VMware, but a problem with openSUSe or libcurl to be specific.  I just downgraded my libcurl to 7.37.0-7.1 from 7.37.0-19.1, and now I can connect.

Maybe there was a change in versions, and the vmware developers are still working to catch up to the changes.

The Tech Preview is working for me also. However, the menus and dialogs created by VMware Workstation are a bit off (menu items crammed together, dialog elements missing, etc. - but everything works) when I run as a normal user. If I run as root, everything displays fine. Is anyone else seeing this?

Hi, OP here,

>Upgrade to Open Suse Leap 42.3

Did that as well, installed 12.5.7

>Can not compile vmmon, vmnet

Same problem, found this:

VMware Workstation 12.5.7 build-5813279.x86_64 does not compile on openSUSE-Leap-42.3-DVD-x86_64

Worked for me.

>Try some workarounds and edit files

See above

Original problem (Workstation 12.5.5 and 12.5.7) crashing when accessing ESXi 5.5 from openSuSE 42.2 (and now 42.3) solved by adding

"VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_LIBS=force" into the vmware command line resp. KDE desktop file:

[Desktop Entry]

Encoding=UTF-8

Name=VMware Workstation

Comment=Run and manage virtual machines

Exec=VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_LIBS=force /usr/bin/vmware %U

...

Thanks to previous poster for finding this workaoround. Works for me 🙂

I have had this issue for quite some time. The suggested fix for coding the libs into a variable does not seem to work on

Leap 42.2 and workstation 12.5.7.

This is the error I am seeing:

VMware Workstation Error:
VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (vmui)
Unexpected signal: 6.

Below is the generated logfile. Note VMware was launched from CLI in this instance as root user.

Same errors are produced as a regular user I just wanted to rule out permissions problems. You can see at

the tail of the log I am a licensed Workstation user. I will likely post to support but wanted to share here

that this is a real issue and has been for some time. This issue occurs whenever you attempt the 'Connect to Server' function.

I wanted to add that it may be related to servers that have been added to a vCenter server but that is just a guess

as I am sure there those of you not running vCenter seeing the same type of error. I just noted the verifyCertErrorResponed.

IF Workstation is not capable of processing the 'Server is managed via vCenter' messages as you see when using 'fat' windows

vSphere client it's conceivable Workstation just barfs and gives up. If I recall correctly it seems like my issues started after deploying vCenter. I also lost the ability to upload VM's from workstation to my ESX servers once vCenter was deployed. While I like vCenter, it

came at an awful price to my previous workflows using Workstation. I cannot say I am a satisfied customer at this point.
