Updating from 6.0 U2 to Update 3

I'm running Vcenter 6 and ESXi 6 with Update 2 and want to install update 3.  Can I just run the setup on the vcenter server iso to update the server?

Assuming you're using the Windows version of the vCenter, just mount the ISO and run the installer. If using vCenter Server Appliance, just let me know.

Hello, If you are looking for upgrading your ESXi server from 6.0 U2 to 6.0 U3, you should use update manager to complete this task. A step by step instruction is here..

Techies Sphere: How to Upgrade ESXi Hosts Using VMware vSphere Update Manager?

For installing patches on ESXi servers, you can refer below KB

http://www.techiessphere.com/2017/04/how-to-use-update-manager-for-patching-esxi-servers.html

If you are looking for upgrading vCenter server to the next version and its on windows, you can just mount the ISO on the server and perform in-place upgrade. Its kind of next-next and finish clicks.. but please make sure you have taken backup of the vcenter server. It is almost similar to new installation of vCenter server except few steps.

http://www.techiessphere.com/2017/01/installing-vcenter-server-60-on-windows-server.html

If you are having your vcenter server on vCenter appliance, you can just mount the applicable ISO on your local machine, run the HTML installer and proceed with option "Upgrade". Yes, off course you should take backup in this case as well.

Reply back if you have any specific query in mind and still not seeing answer above.

Thanks

One thing to note:

With the rollout of ESX6.0 Update 2 (build number 362759) VMware has bundled a new VIB for the VMware VSAN in the update.

Previously there was no VSAN VIB  included the ESXi Image and if you trying to upgrade your host using esxcli with this command you will run into some difficulty

Hi there Richardson,

When you say mount the ISO, is this the actual ISO for vCenter or the ISO for the vCenter patch?

I've had a read over the KB article located here > VMware Knowledge Base

It mentions for vCenter on Windows to mount the ISO VMware-VIMPatch-6.0.0-7037384-20171101.iso and install the patches in this manner.

This has been done, however when I check the vCenter server which was updated, the old build number still comes up.

My intention is to get to the latest version which is currently vCenter Server 6.0 Update 3c on build number 7037394

Appreciate your help.

Cheers

For anyone who comes across this same scenario, I've figured out.

Richardson didn't get back to me unfortunately.

If you have an external PSC and are running vCenter on Windows, you need to patch the PSC first with the patch file, and then mount the FULL ISO of vCenter (not the patch ISO) that you want to update to, mount it and run autorun.exe

The post here helped me out > [SOLVED] vCenter Server 6 (Windows) - What Do I Update to Patch to U1b? - Spiceworks

Happy hunting.

Hey Patrick,

I am running with 2 vCenters and 2 external PSCs. Did you 1) patch the PSC, and then 2) mount the FULL ISO of vCenter on your vCenter server? I'm not clear if Step 2 was done on your PSC or your vCenter box.
