Ubuntu 16.04 + Workstation 12.5.5 + NAT + Static IP on Guest - am i doing it wrong?

OK, quick question - i'm sure i've done this before on Windows hosts and it is surely something people want to work...

Windows guest.  Ubuntu 16.04 host.

VMNET 8 - NAT

DHCP on VMNET 8 enabled as per default - IP range 172.16.85.0/24

DHCP IP in guest = access to outside networks work (can ping 8.8.8.8, DHCP allocated IP was 172.16.85.128)

Static IP in guest (IP 172.16.85.10, netmask 255.255.255.0, gateway 172.16.85.1) = access to outside networks unavailable (can not ping 8.8.8.8.  i can however ping 172.16.85.1)

Is this expected behaviour on a LINUX host?  OR is it something peculiar to my environment?

Is it possible to fix?  I want to set up an AD domain in a lab environment on a NAT network with internet access from my host.

I use/administer: vSphere 6.0 (ESXi) | Workstation 12.5 | Vmware Server 2.0 | Vmware Fusion 12.5 | Windows | FreeBSD | Redhat EL

OK this is wierd.

My gateway IP on the DHCP guest is 172.16.85.2

Changing gateway to this on the statically assigned VM works.

Strange.  I thought the gateway usually set itself up as .1?
