vSphere 6.5 VDP 6.1.4 VMware Tools outdated

Hello,

This has been an ongoing issue with the last few VDP versions.

I update vSphere to the latest version (in this case 6.5.0 5224529) and then the VMware tools on VDP appliances throws a warning that it is out of date.

I learned the hard way that you cannot simply perform the "Upgrade VMware Tools" automatically... it just uninstalls it and then cannot install the new version.

In the past I would just update to the newest version of VDP (in this case 6.1.4) and the problem would go away.

However, it hasn't gone away...

1. Is this problem really hurting anything? Backups seem to be ok.

2. Is there a KB or something that acknowledges this issue and/or provides a fix?

Thanks!

Although it is the most true with ESXi, updating components like VDP is what makes VMware Tools go out of date. Agreed that the auto-installation of VMware is not reliable since autorun is disabled in most server environments, as it should be. Have you not tried to install VMware Tools manually after upgrading the VDP? I don't see evidence of that in your post.

Yes, you should always update VMware Tools if it's out of date, but only after a snapshot. It is not just about functionality or convenient features but often a matter of security. Hence why updating VMware Tools is often an Operational Directive as a matter of compliance.

Hi,

We usually use the option "Upgrade VM tools on next power cycle" for VM tools upgrade on VDP.

Why not take a snapshot and try this. Should work.

Thanks for your helpful responses.

I ended up updating the tools manually after taking a snapshot. Seems to have worked out ok.

This support article below was very helpful in updating the tools manually (since VDP 6.1.4 runs SUSE linux):

With VDP version 6.1.9 (released in Sept 2018) VMware tools for the VDP server can be automatically installed without the more complex instructions mentioned in this thread.

Using WebClient, right-clicking the VDP server, then Guest OS | Install/upgrade VMware Tools works fine, just like for Windows-based VMs.
