What is maximum number of datastores on ESXi6.0/6.5?

Hello,

I wonder what is a maximum number of datastores that I can create on single ESXi hypervisor? In vsphere-65-configuration-maximum there is section 'Storage Maximums' in chapter 'ESXi Host Maximums' , but I can't find the right number of datastore that can be created on a hypervisor.

In "vCenter Server Maximums" is stated: " Datastores 256" and "Hosts 21". Can I assume that I should be able to create 256/21 datastores on single ESXi?

Can someone explain it to me?

I have platform with 11 drives but I can create only 6 datastores. After seven I am getting: "Failed to create VMFS datastore ds7 - Cannot change the host configuration. "

What connection speed are you using ? I have used 1gug and had over 100. I believe its something like 1000+ paths.

Maximum number of datastores that you can create on single ESXi is 512. Please refer Page13 in your attachment.

Try to add 8th LUN, by connecting to ESXi directly using vSphere client and post the status.

Hi ,

Could you please share below information

Type of LUN - iSCSI / FC ?

Using vCenter or Only one ESXi host ?

How many path using to connect ?

@GhostinthedarknessGhostinthedarkness

I have two 1 gig network card.

@GaneshNetworksGaneshNetworks

Ok, thanks.

I am connecting to ESXi directly using vSphere client.

@RAJ_RAJRAJ_RAJ

Only ESXi host. Disk are SSD.

I think LUN is iSCSI.

How can I determine "How many path using to connect ?"

Hi ,

VMware MAX  - iSCSI Physical LUNs per server 512 will support . Check that iSCSi LUN is allocated and provided required access from storage console .

Path you can check from data store , check below image  (click on manage paths )

I am using direct web clinet to ESXi so I don't have this option.

Are you able to add new datastores, after connecting to ESXI directly using vSphere client?

How can I determine "How many path using to connect ?"

  1. Login to vSphere web client
  2. Select the desired datastore in the inventory panel (Left hand side)
  3. Manage > Settings > Connectivity & Multipathing > Select any host in right > Expand "Path" (Scroll down to see this option)

Hi,

Use CLI

  1. Log in to the ESXi host console.
  2. Type  esxcli storage core path list to get detailed information regarding the paths.

    For example:

    fc.5001438005685fb7:5001438005685fb6-fc.5006048c536915af:5006048c536915af-naa.60060480000290301014533030303130
    UID: fc.5001438005685fb7:5001438005685fb6-fc.5006048c536915af:5006048c536915af-naa.60060480000290301014533030303130
    Runtime Name: vmhba1:C0:T0:L0
    Device: naa.60060480000290301014533030303130
    Device Display Name: EMC Fibre Channel Disk (naa.60060480000290301014533030303130)
    Adapter: vmhba1
    Channel: 0
    Target: 0
    LUN: 0
    Plugin: NMP
    State: active
    Transport: fc
    Adapter Identifier: fc.5001438005685fb7:5001438005685fb6
    Target Identifier: fc.5006048c536915af:5006048c536915af
    Adapter Transport Details: WWNN: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx WWPN: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
    Target Transport Details: WWNN: 50:06:04:8c:53:69:15:af WWPN: 50:06:04:8c:53:69:15:af

  3. Type esxcli storage core path list -d naaID to list the detailed information of the corresponding paths for a specific device.( example -  if it is showing same naa.id with details 4 time , you have 4 path )
  4. The command esxcli storage nmp device list lists the LUN multipathing information:

    naa.60060480000290301014533030303130
    Device Display Name: EMC Fibre Channel Disk (naa.60060480000290301014533030303130)
    Storage Array Type: VMW_SATP_SYMM
    Storage Array Type Device Config: SATP VMW_SATP_SYMM does not support device configuration.
    Path Selection Policy: VMW_PSP_FIXED
    Path Selection Policy Device Config: {preferred=vmhba0:C0:T1:L0;current=vmhba0:C0:T1:L0}
    Path Selection Policy Device Custom Config:
    Working Paths: vmhba0:C0:T1:L0

I think upto 512 no. of datastore to be created on ESXi hypervisor. Does your storage is directly attached storage ?. Also it depends on the type of storage you using and storage protocol you used.
