Hi,
Did an upgrade from Vcenter 5.5 appliance to 6.5 appliance, and whilst everything went ok, i know find that i cannot login as root anymore, although i could after the upgrade for a short while, and i have not forgotten the password.
i then went through the steps to reset the password by adding rw init=/bin/bash to grub as in article How to reset the lost or forgotten root password in vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 (2147144) | VMware ... but even though it says the password has been updated, i still cannot login after the reboot.
I can log into the appliance fine as sso or my AD account, just not the console or the application management portal.
any help would be great.
thanks
phil
I'm having the same issue - followed the instructions but still can't log in as root.
Did you ever get this solved?
thanks,

1. Apply KB # 196 (VMware Knowledge Base) for Repeated characters when typing in remote console
2. Reboot appliance and Go to grub >>>Type e
3. Scroll to the second line displaying the kernel boot parameters >>> Type e >>> Type init=/bin/bash >>> Enter >>> Type b
4. System boots to a shell # >>> Type passwd >>> change new password
5. Unlock root account - pam_tally --user root --reset or faillog -u root -r >>> Reboot .
Use above troubleshooting steps and issue will get resolve
