How to verify that 3.5 UM works fine and is actually collecting data?

This question arose several times in this community but was nether addressed afaik...

Customer is very unhappy with the UM appliance. Although no error messages or warnings are thrown they still get empty reports since starting UM 3.5 in October. I cannot believe that there is no mechanism to check at any time if the appliance is actually collecting data or not. I am wondering if UM is internally supported in any way as it seems to be impossible to get any technical assistance beside the hint that UM must run for at least one collection period (4-6 weeks?) to generate report with data )-: What if the appliance get offline for a few minutes?
