Does everyone know Fusion is restricted to one-country use only?

I live in Canada about 5 miles from the US border. I have been upgrading VMWare Fusion forever -- I'm very loyal. I have a US address and credit cards and for convenience use those cards (which have to be attached to a US address, of course) to pay in USD.

Now I have tried to upgrade once again, from Version 7 to Version 8.5 to be compatible with Sierra, and the store won't let me. It turns out that according to tech support, the store's website is preventing me from upgrading because my version of Fusion is restricted to use in the US only and the site sees me at a Canadian IP address.

What?! I was told also, that if I used my US version of Fusion in Canada I would be in violation. Of something. Am I committing some kind of crime here?

This is nuts. I have been recommending Fusion to others for years. But not under these circumstances. The only solution that Tech Support had was for me to buy the complete version in Canada, which is a lot more $$$. The least VMWare should do is make an international version available for an upgrade price to people like me.

But anyone who routinely travels anywhere should be aware -- you apparently can't take Fusion with you. Maybe everybody else already knows. If so, do you have a solution?

Good luck!

Mike

You could go the 5 miles and do the upgrade in the U.S.

I don't recall paying more for VMware Fusion in Canada, except maybe a small fee from Cdn$ to US$. If that's the issue, you can keep US$ in a PayPal account and use that.

No, officially, I can't go to the US to upgrade, because the support person said that officially I can't use a version I bought in the US in Canada! Also, though the border is only a short distance away, it is not the easiest thing in the world to cross.

The extra cost is because I was also told that since I had apparently purchased my previous version of Fusion in the US, I could not do an upgrade in Canada to go from version 7 to version 8.5. He told me I would have to pay the new price instead of the upgrade price in order to get the software here. A difference of $30 US.

Can you tell me your SR number? You should be able to upgrade like this, but there are rules in place to prevent abuse.

You can email me if you prefer: mroy at vmware dot com
