NIC Speed Issue of VMNIC7 - Cable is Cat6

Hi,

I am having a problem on one of my VMNICs. Here are the details of my vsphere environment:

ESXi version 5.0 3982828

Issue: VMNIC7 showing only 100 FULL while other nics is 1000FULL

Check the configuration on the server to patch panel to patch panel to nw switch and found that the VMNIC7 port have cat6 cable and all other nic ports on the server have cat5e. I would like to ask before making any changes if that is causing the problem with the CAT6? it seems weird since Cat6 is compatible also backward and can use/mix with other cables?

Thank you!

Make sure the VMNIC 7 is set to "Active" not "Standby". If its active, try to un-register and configured the VMNIC again.

thanks fkhan1 for the response.

We're using distributed switch btw. In your statement of "unregister and then configured the vmnic again" do you mean add/remove the vmnic7 in the ESXi host via manage physical adapters?

Thank you!

Yes, I meant add/remove the "vmnic7" in the ESXi host via manage physical adapters. Also, make sure to verify the VMNIC properties (security, Traffic shaping, NIC Teaming) with other VMNICs in your environment.

I'm pretty sure the cable type is not the problem here. It might be a faulty cable (unlikely) but otherwise it should work just as well as cat5e or cat7.

Check the physical switch port configuration where your vmnic7 is attached to. Make sure both ends are configured for auto-negotiation of speed AND duplex. A mismatch will typically cause a fallback to a lower speed.

You can confirm this pretty quickly if you just swap the cables on the host-end between vmnic7 and another NIC that is running at 1000/full. If the other NIC gets only get 100 now then the switch port probably has misconfigured speed/duplex settings.
