Update Manager Rollback

I have VUM 6 installed in my enviornment at present but i need to upgrade a few hosts from ESX 5.5 u2 to 5.5 u3 before going to ESX 6. As you cant use the ESX 5.5 iso's with VUM 6, is it possible to either rollback VUM from 6 to 5.5 or else have two seperate VUM vm's running?

If there were two VUM vm's could i power off VUM 6 while upgrading the ESX 5.5 hosts and then power it back on after?

Thanks!

AFAIK the VUM version has to match the vCenter Server version, so you cannot use VUM 5.5 with vCenter Server 6.0.

How many hosts do you need to update? In case of just a few hosts, it might be an option to update them using the esxcli command with the desired .zip bundle.

Hi,

If there are less number of ESXi host then you can manually upgrade them the 5.5 U3.

1. You can download the patch/upgrade build from http://www.vmware.com/patchmgr/findPatch.portal and then

2. Upload the update-from-esxi5.5-5.5_update03. zip file to your datastore of the ESXi host and verify the file is visible in the directory inside the datastore .

3. Before upgrading to ESXi 5.5 update 1, verify the build version of our ESXi host. OR You can verify the build version of ESXi 5.5 from the command line using the below command: vmware -v

4. Execute the below command to install the ESXi 5.5 update 1 :

esxcli software vib install -d /datastore/directory/update-from-esxi5.5-5.5_update03. zip

5. Once ESXi 5.5 update 3 is installed on the ESXi host, You can see the message “The update completed successfully, but the system needs to be rebooted for the changes to be effective”.  Reboot the ESXi host. Once ESXi host is back after the reboot, verify the ESXi version after upgrade to ESXi 5.5 update 3.

6. Check the build version also.
7. That’s it. You are done with the upgrade to ESXi 5.5 update3.

I hope this is informative/helpful for you and you can update to 6.0 later on via VUM

Thanks n Regards
