Problem highlighting MS OFFICE Text in OS X Guest VM

I use an OS X "guest" VM for work activities so as to have a "roped off" VM, where I can put all the corporate software, spyware, etc, without worrying about them having access to my Mac outside the VM.  I'm running OS X Sierra 10.12 on both the host and the guest, and Fusion 8.5.  I should say, however, the the problem that follows started when running El Capitan on both host and guest, so the problem is not Sierra related

All was well, until I updated Office 365 for Mac from ver 10.19.1 to 10.25.0 and later.  Highlighting text "works", in the sense that I can highlight and delete or move text, but the highlighting color doesn't show up (It always turned the highlighted text blue, as according to my system preferences).  I went through laborious troubleshooting with MS tech support Levels 1 and 2, and the only way I could get text highlighting to work again was to uninstall o365, and re-install 10.19.1 again.  Then all was good.  Obviously, I'd like to update for security and other purposes, but not if the price is loss of highlighting text.

I've run the update on the host machine (no issues, highlighting works fine) and on a laptop (again, all is working fine).  its just on the VM, and just with versions of office older than 10.19.1

My colleague at work runs the same exact set up, and he faces the very same problem.

The updated software works fine in the host, and the other machine.  Just not the VM.  Has anyone else seen this problem, and more importantly, SOLVED it?

Aside:  If your security folks are like ours (and I'm a security architect by day), you're probably violating policy - its usually the host that's required to be managed and monitored.

To your question, there's no 3d acceleration in an OSX guest, so all sorts of strange things happen.  It's possible the newer office requires that to work.
