workstation 12 much slower after win 10 "anniversary" upgrade

The difference is dramatic, near the point of unusability.

The laptop has 8GB RAM. The VMWare virtual machine has 2GB.

An Adobe Acrobat PDFmaker task in the VM is more than an order of magnitude slower than it was before the update.

Anybody understand why this might be so, and what can be done about it?

You can try updating to Workstation 12.5 as it lists Windows 10 anniversary update as being supported.
