Can't create new VMs running Fusion on MacOS Sierra

I'm ondering if this is a known problem. I am testing MacOS Sierra 10.12 Beta (16A286a) and have Fusion 8.1.1 installed since El Capitan. My previously created VMs run but when I try to create a new VM, it fails to create the installation medium.

I realize Sierra is in beta so I won't be shocked if Fusion need to be updated.

Any thoughts?

Hi there,

Is this for macOS VMs or other VM's?

Have you seen this? Fix for installing macOS Sierra as a VM - VMware Fusion Blog - VMware Blogs

I'm running MacOS Sierra on my iMac. I'm not trying to create a Sierra VM. If it matters I was trying to create an El Capitan VM.

Understood, but if you apply the fix does it work?

I don't know. It never occurred to me to try since I wasn't installing a Sierra guest. I'll give it a try.

FWIW, instead of running for awhile before getting the create media failure VMWare immediately crashed. I'm fairly certain I installed the patch correctly. I right-clicked the link, replace the old mavericks tool then changed the permissions. I didn't reboot however.

I haven't figured out anything. Does anyone know if VMWare Fusion 8.1.1 is compatible with Sierra? If its not, I can stop trying to create a VM.

Everything should just work, I've only had issues with the first public beta causing Fusion to crash, but that was long fixed by Apple.

I would recommend filing a support ticket to get more in depth.

Drop us a line at desktop-services@vmware.com and our team can help you out.

Thank you Michael. I may just do that. In the process of trying to figure this out, I thought perhaps I needed to reset the ACLs. Turns out when I boot into recovery mode and try to type in resetpassword in the terminal it won't accept the command so it may be an issue with my install. If I can sort out what's happening with my machine perhaps I will be able to get things back to normal.

Thanks again.

Mikero,

I thought I would update you. I did create support ticket and someone from VMWare was nice enough to call me. However, after we talked and he assured me more than once that VMWare 8..1.1 running on Sierra would create new guests he would be back in touch, twice. I haven't heard back.

FWIW, I did create a new Windows and Linux machine without any problem. I also added an exiting Windows 10 trial from modernie with no problem. It still stubbornly refuses to create a Yosemite or El Capitan machine.

So it goes.

Interesting.  By any chance are you running MacPorts on your host?  That's one thing that we've found which sometimes messes with our ability to create new OS X virtual machines, closely followed by manual replacement of core system utilities (awk, mktemp, basename...) on the OS X host with other non-Apple versions.  Just a possibility.

Cheers,

No. not running MacPorts and haven't replaced any core elements. What has worked is making a copy of a pre-existing OSX VM and then upgrading it from the App Store. Not exactly ideal but it works.
