Enable Virtualization on iMac running Linux

Hello,

I am running Linux Mint as the main OS on my Intel iMac (2007).

The CPU is a Core 2 Duo 7700 x86_64 with Intel VT-x support.

I have VMWare Workstation player installed, but when I run a VM I get the error message:

"Virtualized Intel VT-x/EPT is not supported on this platform.

Continue without virtualized Intel VT-x/EPT?"

Does anyone have any ideas of how to enable it?

Hi,

Welcome at the VMware community forums.

What type of guest OS are you trying to run in that VM?

Note that workstation player is complaining about supporting a virtual version of VT-x not the host VT-x itself.

This is needed for example if you want to run a hypervisor within VMware Player (nested virtualisation where that hypervisor itself can have virtual machines) and should not be needed for normal guest OS's.

Your Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T7700 lacks the Extended Page Tables feature which is necessary for virtualized VT-x.

But... you only need virtualized VT-x if you want to run virtual machines within your virtual machine – called Nested Virtualization.

If you just want to run a virtual machine, and don't need to run virtual machines within your virtual machine, simply deselect Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI in your VM's settings (instructions).  Your virtual machine will continue to make use of your host processor's hardware virtualization capabilities, but we will not try to virtualize VT-x for use inside the virtual machine.

If you need to use nested virtual machines, you'll need to upgrade to a system with a more modern and capable processor.

Cheers,

Thank you for your posts.

I am running Linux Mint natively on my iMac hardware then using VM Workstation to run GNS3 VM.

So it sounds like i just need to uncheck that box, as I'm not running a VM within a VM.

Thank you for your help again, it is much appreciated.
