Moving a virtual vcenter to another datastore

Dear All,

I have two Esxi hosts and also running vcenter as a virtual machine. The license I have for vSphere is essentials plus kit which do not allow storage vmotion when machine is on. I need to move my vcenter to another datastore to free some space in current datastore. In this case when I can not do storage vmotion when vcenter is on, If I power it off, how to move it to another datastore?

Are you running version 5.5 (vCenter Server and ESXi)? In this case, the Essentials Plus edition allows to live migrate VMs using the Web Client using the option "Change both host and datastore".

Hello André,

Yes, it is 5.5 U2 Esxi and vcenter, we bought original license for vSphere essentials plus kit 5 and later upgraded to 5.5 as we came to know we are entitled for upgrade and do not need another license key.

Now I checked as you provided the information and Yes, I can see the choice of changing both 'host and datastore' while machine is on. So, many thanks for bringing this to my knowledge, it was unknown to me.

Please advise is it ok to migrate vcenter (host + data store) while it is on. There are only two hosts and SQL express DB is running in virtual vcenter.

Yes, that can be done. I actually did this myself some time ago.
