MacOS Sierra and VMware Fusion 8.1

Anyone know if Fusion will run on the new MacOS beta?

Yep, that's the only sane way to run the first beta of a new OS.

Hi,

Can you briefly explain how you did this? I didn't work for me.

Thanks!

They were saying that they just made a regular OS X VM (file > New > Install OS X VM from the recovery partition)

and then just upgraded that to macOS 10.12 the same way you would on a physical computer (i.e. app store with an paid developer account)

Fusion 8.1.1 on macOS Sierra beta 1 => Win 7 guest worked for me the last two weeks

Yesterday I upgraded to macOS Sierra beta 2 => Win 7 guest worked.

Today I did a disk cleanup in my Win 7 guest and started the guest => "Internal Error".

I tried disabling the graphics acceleration on the guest as suggested in previous answers, but still get the "Internal Error" when starting the guest.

Any idea?

(Tried now also starting other guests with XP, Win 10, all throwing "internal error", but I don't know if they did before...)

I have macOS Sierra (beta 2) running in VMWare Fusion 8.1.1 on my MacBook Pro running El Capitan. The one odd thing I notice so far is that when I check out Sierra's Maps, all I see is a black background. No maps show up. Dropped pins show up, but nothing else. Not enough graphics memory in the VM? (Mine is set at 256 MB)  Or something else?  My MacBook Pro is a late 2014 model, with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB hard drive.

Thanks for any help.

- Problem seems not related with the guests. When starting a guest, the log of the guest is not even created

- Tried reinstall of Fusion, but still the same error.

I just installed macOS 10.12 (16A238m) - the first public beta.

I can confirm @Downeater59's Maps application issue - black screen. I have seen the exact same black screen issue with the Maps application in past versions of OS X. I remember complaints about it when Maps was first released with Mavericks. See the fifth post in this thread as an example:

Re: Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) Guest Issues in VMware Fusion v6.0.1

Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) Guest Issues in VMware Fusion v6.0.1

Here is another macOS Sierra issue that I found:

MacOS Sierra kernel panics on shutdown, which causes the virtual machine to reboot itself. I also tried terminal commands to shut it down, but nothing changed. I can break the cycle by holding the Option key and choosing "Power Off" from the VMware Fusion Virtual Machine menu. (The Power Off option is hidden unless you are pressing the Option key.)

I tried reinstalled macOS Sierra beta using its recovery partition. I was prompted for my Apple account information before the system would reinstall the OS. Strangely enough, VMware Tools was still installed AFTER reinstalling macOS. After the reinstall, there was no change - the virtual machine still kernel panics on shutdown.

I am running VMware Fusion 8.1.1 on an OS X 10.11.5 El Capitan host.

Thanks for the links! They explained the Maps issue. The same thing happened when I tried installing El Capitan as a VM in VirtualBox on my Dell Venue 11 Pro. Same reason, no doubt.

There's no 3d acceleration in OSX guests, so nothing that requires it will work properly.  I suspect that's what's going on here.

Made a new clean installation of Fusion 8.1.1 on macOS Sierre Beta 2.

Created a new guest with Win XP from an ISO-image.

When starting the new guest for installation it directly throws "Internal Error".

I am splitting off from this thread and moving to a new thread created by padna :

MacOS Sierra Beta as Guest in VMware Fusion 8.1.1 fails

The thread above is for people who want to run macOS 10.12 Sierra as a virtual machine guest, presumably on an El Capitan (or earlier) host.

I have updates to my issues with running macOS 10.12 Sierra in a virtual machine, and will put them in the new thread, above.

- - - - -

I will leave this thread to those people who want to install VMware Fusion on their macOS 10.12 Sierra BETA hosts.

Hopefully others will follow along with splitting the two threads. My thanks to padna for his effort to split the threads into a more sensible arrangement.

As was mentioned earlier in this thread, try disabling 3D graphics, that seems to resolve this for everyone so far.

Sorry, Michael, but "Accelerate 3D Graphics" has been disabled the entire time. That includes when the virtual machine worked (with no VMware Tools) and when it would kernel panic (with VMware Tools installed). In addition, "Use full resolution for Retina display" has also been disabled, not that it applies to my non-Retina iMac.

P.S. I responded here, but should have responded in this thread, which was created for people running macOS Sierra Beta as a virtual machine guest:

MacOS Sierra Beta as Guest in VMware Fusion 8.1.1 fails

Thanks.

What happens if my VM is suspended and not shut down, is any way to shut it down so I will be able to de-select the 3D acceleration?

Thanks vmxmr.

Unfortunately, no. I'm referring to my windows VM hosted on Sierra.

I fI want to disable 3D acceleration, I must have my VM in a shut down mode and it's not. It's in suspend mode.

I am looking for a way to shut it down with out taking out of suspend mode as unsuspending it just doesn't work (the wheel just keeps on spinning for hours).

Anyone with an idea? Thanks.

Does holding down the option key and Power Down work? (Can you do it during Resume?)

NOTE: Make a backup of the suspended virtual machine first!!

To Get my Virtual Machines to Run on VMWare Fusion (8.1.1) on a MacOS 10.12 host (macOS 10.12 Beta (16A238m)) I had to do the following:

1) Remove the saved state from the machine (like hard rebooting a machine, so any in progress work will be lost)

1.1) Go to the file for your Virtual Machine using the Finder

1.2) Right-Click on the file and select "Show Package Contents"

1.3) Delete any files with the following file extensions: *.VMSS &. *.LCK

1.4) Open the .VMX file in a plain text editor (I used Visual Studio Code for Mac, TextWrangler, BBEdit, vim, nano, etc... would also work)

1.5) find the line with checkpoint.vmState = "SomeFileName".  and change it to be just:  checkpoint.vmState = ""

1.66) Save the file and close it from your text editor

2) Clearing the Graphics conflict

2.1) Go back to VMWare Fusion, and open the settings for your Virtual Machine.

2.2) In the Display settings remove the option for accelerated 3D Graphics

3) Start up your Virtual Machine.

The VM runs slower, but at least you can get in and do stuff.
