log Insight /etc/hosts

I need to add an entry for manual DNS resolution  but the /etc/hosts gets over written at each reboot. Is there a work around?

Manual changes are not supported. You can set network properties through OVF properties. Why do you need to add a manual entry?

./vami_set_hostname FQDN will do it but again like Steve said this is not supported and setting via OVF properties is the correct recommended way.

Because log insight is behind a FW and we dont want to open it up to DNS servers.

So can I add a static entry through the ovf config?

OVF properties let you set networking information such as IP and hostname -- if you set these then they will get set in /etc/hosts. Anything beyond this is not supported. Also note, LI requires forward and reverse DNS in order to function properly as stated in the documentation. Failure to do this may result in the /admin/hosts table containing incorrect information and will definitely result in inventory information being incorrect which means problems with vSphere as well as vR Ops integration. Proper NTP and DNS are base requirements for most enterprise software (and definitely all VMware products).
