copy paste not working ... simple stuff

I'm running ESXi 6.0 and I have an Ubuntu 14.04 server VM running ... I access it via the VMWare Remote Console on my Mac desktop .....

Copy/Paste doesn't work.

I've tried adding config params like this:

VMware KB: Clipboard Copy and Paste does not work in vSphere Client 4.1 and later

In the VM I installed tools like so:

sudo apt-get install -y open-vm-tools

how do I get copy/paste working?

Did you try to reinstall VMware tools

tried just to see if that might be it .. no joy .. anyway .. how many times do we have to install the tools? VCSA says they are installed and running....

same thing is happening in my fusion VMs .. no copy paste there either....

stumped !!

any other ideas?
