Has anyone else experience since upgrading to 8.1.1 that the VM is unusable? I'm running Windows 10 in the VM and it will run fine for awhile but when I click into it, it will freeze up and be unusable. Nothing else has changed on my system other than this 'upgrade'
Hi,
You're the first person I see that complains about this.
In your case I would simply go back to version 8.1.0

When upgrading, do make sure that you've also updated Tools.
If you choose to downgrade and the issue goes away, I'd very much like to know so we can investigate.
Thanks, I had a call from support and they tried some things. Initially the problem went away but then returned. I ended up going back to 8.1 for now and it seems to be running fine again but skeptical. Going to monitor the next day or two to see if I can see if it could be something other than 8.1.1 but the only change I had made when upgrading was upgrading to that version, everything else on my system stayed the same and the VM as well.
What kind of Mac to do you have, btw?
SSD or 'spinning' hard disk?
It's a MacBook Pro, SSD drive.
It was working fine with 8.1 and has been working fine after reverting. I can try upgrading again on the weekend and see if the problem persists.
I had a different issue when upgrading to 8.1.1
After the upgrade, Unity view was perpetually greyed out, despite restarting my Windows 10 guest OS and my Mac, on which Fusion runs.
I tried to reinstall VMWare Tools, but that fails as it makes a system error noise and freezes on "Installing Thin Print Drivers". After 8+ hours of waiting on that, I had to force quit and restart the system. I have tried multiple times to reinstall VMWare Tools with no success as it ALWAYS freezes on the Thin Print drivers.
I then tried to install without Thin Print drivers by deselecting "Virtual Print" during the Tools installation and the installation completes BUT now I can't print anything from my Windows 10 programs. They all give an error indicating I have no printers installed, even though I do actually have printers installed.
Additionally, there is no possible way to uninstall VMWare Tools while running Windows 10 64-bit and Fusion 8.1.1 or 8.1.0
I then tried to downgrade to 8.1.0. This failed to fix the issue outright as I still cannot print from within the virtual machine.
I then tried to reinstall VMware Tools within 8.1.0. This, once again makes a system error noise and hangs in perpetuity at "Installing Thin Print Drivers" See the following screenshot.
Selecting "Cancel" fails to actually cancel the installation and I am forced to end the task through Task Manager. Despite this, if I want to try again, I cannot as the system still thinks that the previous installation is running.
Also, my Mac is running OS X 10.11.4 and is an iMac with a Fusion Drive (which is a combined SSD and standard hard drive)
Same thing happened to me. I am using MAC OS Version 10.11.4 El Capitan on a MacBook Pro with * GB memory. The windows version is Windows 7.
I was asked when starting up VM Fusion if I wanted to upgrade, I said yes and downloaded the files. Then the install quit and now I have a Icon in my applications folder labeled VM Fusion but when I click on it, a message appears that VM Fusion is damaged or incomplete. Do I start over?
Lucius, your issue sounds like a different one. None of the preferences or VMs are in the application folder, so I’d just delete VMware Fusion and either restore from backup or download a fresh copy & install that, and you should be fine.
Yes, I upgraded to 8.1.1 and experienced a similar issue. I'm running Win 7 in the VM on my Macbook Pro (El Capitan 10.11.4). 8.1.1 was only change, have had it for about 7 days and my VM has starting locking up and eventually crashing several times a day. Initiation for the freeze ups is somewhat random but typically on a click for some action inside the VM. I just downgraded back to 8.1.0 in hopes that I can get back to a usable tool again.....
