VMWare tools really needed?

Hi Community,

I had a very generic question regarding VMWare tools. I have a few Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Server machines only without X deployed. I do not require any USB. Do i still have to install VMWare tools? Does that help in any way besides the USB support?

‌technically no. It could buy you easier access to device drivers, nic , etc. it also provides you access directly to the vas from the host to run commands with VMrun. But no, it's not required.

‌If you are just trying to keep unnecessary stuff from being installed, try the open VM tools. It works well and is managable through the normal Ubuntu packages.
