VMwareVDMDS Service Missing After Upgrading Connection server to Windows 2012 R2

Hi

I recently upgraded our connection server to View 6 which all worked fine.

I decided to upgrade the OS from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2. The upgrade went through OK but when the server came up the View Connection service wouldn't start. It complained about missing a dependency which was the VMWareVDMDS service which was no longer there.

Has anyone come across this when upgrading the OS?

I'm a little stuck on what to do next. Any help appreciated.

The VMwareVDMDS service is a simple wrapper around an AD LDS install (see https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc754361%28v=ws.10%29.aspx). It appears that it is somehow being removed during Windows upgrade, presumably because Microsoft don't support in-place upgrades of that component.

Note that we don't actually support in-place OS upgrades - you should instead install a new 2012 R2 server as a replica, switch everything to point to it, and then retire the original 2008 R2 server.
