Hi there,
We've got some serious Problems on our MSA2324fc.
Our logs are full with error messages like these:
Disk channel error. (channel: 0, ID: 11, SN: 3SE0SBTW00009003NHE7, enclosure: 1, slot: 12): Protocol Error CDB:Rd 0000be00 0080
and these:
Disk channel error. (channel: 0, ID: 11, SN: 3SE0SBTW00009003NHE7, enclosure: 1, slot: 12): I/O Timeout CDB:Rd 035c3660 0010
sometimes these:
An
error was detected by a disk drive. (disk: channel: 0, ID: 11, SN:
3SE0SBTW00009003NHE7, enclosure: 1, slot: 12)(Key,Code,Qual:0xB,0x4B,0x3)(CDB:Rd 035617c0 0030)(Info:0x035617ED)(CmdSpc:0x0, FRU:0x6, SnsKeySpc:0x0)(Aborted Command, ack/nak timeout)
and even these: (note that we only use 12 disks, out of 24 possible. what's slot 32 then?)
Disk channel error. (channel: 0, ID: 31, SN: 3CL903C333, enclosure: 1, slot: 32): Protocol Error CDB:1c0102010800
The errors come up with all different slots, note just one or 2 disks, and this as soon as we generate traffic on our ESX VMs.
When installing Exchange in a VM, ESX can even freeze.
The Vdisk and Volume seem to be clean.
Here's our config:
1 MSA2324fc with 2 controllers
2 DL380G6 with 2 QLogic HBAs HP81Q (QLE2560 aka Part Nr: AK344A)each
ESX 4 vSphere fully patched
Of course the latest drivers are on the MSA as well (M110R21-01).
Patches we already installed:
ESX400-200906001.zip
ESX400-200907001.zip
ESX400-200909001.zip
Any idea what could cause this?
Hi Steffen,
The issue is an known issue and the errors don't affect the data integrity, future firmware will fix the issue. We discovered the same issues today on our MSA2324fc. We consulted the HP Storage Engineer who setup the SAN and he gave us this answer:
HP StorageWorks 2000 G2 Modular Smart Array (MSA) - Products Generating "Disk channel error" Events when MSA70 Enclosures Used as Expansion JBODs
HP StorageWorks 2000 G2 Modular Smart Array (MSA) products with firmware code M110R21 and M110R20 connected with MSA70 Drive enclosures generate the following event:
Disk channel error.
We observed the following events on MSA2000 G2 store.log , which are connected with MSA70 drive enclosures:
A359 2009-08-27 08:02:07 59 I A Disk channel error. (channel: 0, ID: 63, SN: SGA, enclosure: 2, slot: 32): Protocol Error CDB:1c0102015c00
A360 2009-08-27 10:41:59 59 I A Disk channel error. (channel: 0, ID: 34, SN: 3SE0M4H500009948PZR9, enclosure: 2, slot: 3): Protocol Error CDB:Rd 1ef98f00 0080
A361 2009-08-27 10:41:59 59 I A Disk channel error. (channel: 0, ID: 36, SN: 3SE0M2A100009948P8B5, enclosure: 2, slot: 5): Protocol Error CDB:Rd 1ef98f00 0080
A362 2009-08-27 10:41:59 59 I A Disk channel error. (channel: 0, ID: 38, SN: 3SE0M2ZC00009949U37X, enclosure: 2, slot: 7): Protocol Error CDB:Rd 1ef98f00 0080
Issue
Disk channel errors reported by drives on an MSA70.
Workaround
When an MSA2000 G2 array is using MSA70s as expansion JBODs, disk channel errors might be reported. These errors do not affect data integrity and are being investigated for correction in a future update of firmware.
I know this is an old thread, but is there any update to this issue? I've begun seeing these warnings on my MSA2324i with MSA70 Expansions. Please let me know if there has been a firmware update to correct the issue.
Regards,
-Scott
Hi Scott
It does not seem that there is a solution and all indications are that we should ignore this event.
I have a MSA2324i with a MSA70 enclosure. I have upgraded the firmware on the MSA2324i to the latest M114P01-01:
http://h20565.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=5155991&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=7
The MSA70's firmware was already to at the newest version.
Disk firmware upgrades end in error.
I continue to get the error:
Disk channel error (channel 0, ID 63, SN:SGA00201YO, enclosure 2 slot32): I/O timeout CDB: 1c0102015c00
*Edit
I have also reconfigured the disks and volumes and get the same message even if there is no data or access or I/O on the MSA2324i and MSA70 enclosure.
