VMX File Corrupt

Hi, I see you guys helped someone else out fixing their corrupt VMX file and I have the same issue, with no VMWare technical skill. I am running a Windows XP Prof VM within W7 using VMWare Player.

I see you needed the VMX file from the other guy's question, and here it is.

Thanking you kind people in advance

Please check whether all the VMware services are running (e.g. "VMware Authorization Service")

Welcome to the Community,

I'm not sure what you are having trouble with!? The attached .vmx file seems to be ok for me.

If you have issues with a corrupted .vmx file, please provide the corrupt .vmx file along with the vmware*.log files in the VM's folder.

Hi,

Thanks for coming back to me, most grateful.

Sorry, the vmx I included was one that I "borrowed" from somewhere else that someone claimed would fix the problem - obviously not. I have put the original file back and zipped it with 4 log files. The 7th Nov one was taken during the last usable session I had.

Thank you again

Brian

I still don't see an issue with the .vmx file. I extracted the configuration from the vmware.log file(s), compared it with the attached .vmx file, and didn't find a difference.

Do you receive an error message when you try to start the VM (which one)? Maybe the issue is related to one of the other files!?

Hi,

I get a specific VMX error when I double-click on the vmdk file in Explorer: "Error while opening the virtual machine: VMX file is corrupt."

However, the error message when I start it through VMWare Player is: "Error while powering on: Internal error."

The screenshot shows some of them with Status "Stopped". Did you install new applications, or upgrade the host lately? Maybe the system's event log helps finding out why the services are not running.

Ah yes, I've had other problems with device drivers since yesterday and had Microsupport support sharing my machine and they ran some Windows Updates and stuff like that. Not 100% certain what they did.

"Maybe the system's event log helps finding out why the services are not running." Where/what/how do I get hold of/deal with this? I am only partly technical

I went to the Services tab and then the RMB to the separate Services Window. In Properties, I changed all the startup types to Manual and started them all. Now I am in the VM !!

So, do you think I should set them all the Automatic now?

The default is Automatic for all the VMware services.

Thank you Andre, I would never thought of looking at Services - Error messages can be so misleading!
