Copy snapshot to cloud backup

Hi folks,

I have a few scheduled tasks that take snapshot of virtual machines and store it in the local datastore. SInce we have a cloud based backup solution in place, we wanted to copy those snapshot files from datastore to the cloud. Is there a better way to do it than manually copying the snapshot files to my computer and then pushing it to the cloud? Also correct me if I am wrong in assuming that it is possible to recover the virtual machine from the snapshot.

Thanks,

Ojas

Hello.

Note: This discussion was moved from the VMware ESX™ 4 community to the Backup & Recovery community.

Are you backing up the snapshot files (the small delta files) or the full VMDK files? Just backing up the snapshot files will not work.

Good Luck!

You can copy the flat vmdk (not the delta vmdk) to save your data.

But consider to use a backup program for this task.

I would agree to look at backup solution for what you are doing. A snapshot is different then a backup and wouldn't suggestion trying to recover from a snapshot.

Hi Andre,

Do you mean backup the two files that I highlighted? From what I have read online the delta files are the ones with numbers appended at the end (00001, 00002 etc) and since this machine has 2 drives C and D, I would backup the highlighted files.

Thanks,

HI Pete,

What backup solution do you suggest? Are there any good open source backup solutions out there?

Thanks,

Ojas

I used to work for one of the backup vendors so I don't know if I can make a good recommendation on it. I would suggest try a few in your labs to see what works best for you.

I guess you should try using "Ahsay backup software" as this software can surely resolve your problem and most important i can give backup to large files as well. So give it a try.
