I have been using VM Ware on my Mac OSX for about a year with no problem. All of a sudden, it gives an error: Windows_XPSP2.vmwarevm/Windows_XPSP2.vmx" line 1: Syntax error.
Any suggestions on how I can repair the machine, or retrieve my files? I've read the beginners guide and cannot located the .vmx file (unless it is one named "preferences"), and the Mac Search engine will not bring up a .vmx file.

Sorry but can't do a thing for you without the .log files as mentioned in the very first reply of this thread!
OK...There are four different .log files, which one do you need or do you need all?
BHay123 wrote: Here are the four different .log files. NOt sure which one you needed.
The attached "Windows_7_x64_2.vmx.zip" file contains a new "Windows 7 x64 2.vmx" file created from the supplied vmware.log file.
With VMware Fusion closed, unzip (double-click) the downloaded attached "Windows_7_x64_2.vmx.zip" file and replace the original "Windows 7 x64 2.vmx" file with the one here.
Thanks so much.

Thanks, Andre, it's pretty obvious that YOU are able to resolve this really quickly with the right files. Would it be possible to detail the steps you take so I can try repairing the corruption myself if it happens again? I'm working at +0GMT so assuming you're operating in the US somewhere under normal business hours, I have to wait for you to wake up, come to work and make your way to my post. In this case, I wrote at 8 am and didn't get a response until after close of business here, so lost the whole day. I DO appreciate your prompt response, in that it took less than 24 hours, but I'm hoping there's an even better solution out there.
It's actually not hard to recreate the .vmx file. You simply need to extract the lines from the latest vmware.log file and format it appropriately, i.e. remove preceding spaces, and enclose the values in double quotes.
The required lines start at "--- CONFIGURATION /Users/...", and end with the next section "DICT --- ...". I created a small DOS batch script which I use. This will not work on a MAC, but I will attach it anyway.
