can you tell me what is wrong with the vlan configuration for this setup?

i am running two esxi hosts on vmware workstation and vcenter on windows 2008 r2 server. Both the hosts  have 2 VMs running on it.

setup:

vCenter Server: 192.168.80.100

ESXi1: vmnic: 192.168.81.1

           management ip(vmk): 192.168.81.100

           server1: 192.168.81.101

           server2: 192.168.81.102

ESXi2: vmnic: 192.168.82.1

           management ip(vmk): 192.168.82.100

           server1: 192.168.82.101

           server2: 192.168.82.102

All networks are host only i.e.(192.168.80.0 , 192.168.81.0, 192.168.82.0) and connected to each other through a router on gns3.

I created one VDS and configured port groups and moved VMs to port groups.

when no vlan is configured for port group1, i am able to ping from 192.168.81.101 and 82.101 to every other host. But when i configure the vlan to VLAN ID:1, the VMs get isolated. Server1 is not able to ping any other VM and same with server3.

Server1 should ping server3 and vice-versa, but its not happening.

Please help

VLAN 1 is typically reserved for network switches to communicate with one another.  I'm by no means a network expert, but even though you are using private IP's, I would imagine VLAN 1 is still potentially an issue and not best practice to use.  I would also assume that pretty much any other VLAN would work just fine.

I tried with VLAN 10 but it doesn't solve the issue. Can you suggest any other issue with the configuration?

Thanks

Hi

Uplink ports should be trunk ports so that VLAN information can be passed through that because VM1 and VM2 are in the different hosts.

Please try to modify this, this solution will workout to you.

Hi,

the uplink port group configuration was in trunk mode , but still it's not working. I am not able to ping between the VMs in VLAN 10.
