NSX and vCloud Director Integration

hi guys

We deployed NSX 6.1.4 and vCloud Director 5.6.4

My coworker has been working with NSX and  I deployed some MVs for him to play with

his tests are working fine using NSX those VMs have Internet, connectivity between them, VPN and so on...basically what he was looking for....

now the issue is the integration with vCloud looks like not working

first someone knows a document for this integration?

second where should deploy the Edge Gateway from NSX or from vCloud?

third I created the Edge Gateway from vCloud and we got version 5.5.4 any idea why is that and not the NSX version?

as you can see edge-5 was deployed using vCloud and created a previous version

thanks

NSX is supported with vCloud Director via 'backwards compatibility mode'.  The edge from vCD will be the exact same as a vCNS 5.5.4 Edge, which is what you are seeing.

This release note is from 8.0, but does mention 5.6 in it:

  • NSX support: vCloud Director for Service Providers 8.0 adds support for NSX 6.1.4 in backward compatibility mode. This means that tenants' consumption capability is unchanged and remains at the vCloud Networking and Security feature level of vCloud Director 5.6.

What isn't working with vCloud?  The Edge is deployed and attached to an isoalted network backed by a network pool.  This should provide the functionality provided by the vCloud Director website or API, which is passed downstream to NSX to configure the Edge itself.

VMware KB 2096351 covers the interop limitations between vCD and NSX.

"second where should deploy the Edge Gateway from NSX or from vCloud?"  It'll deploy to the System vDC resource pool of the cluster where the network is available, and a datastore that's enabled in the Org vDC Storage Policies.

"third I created the Edge Gateway from vCloud and we got version 5.5.4 any idea why is that and not the NSX version?" -> you're not going to get a 6.1.x edge from vCloud when you request a Gateway to be deployed.  this is what I mentioned in my previous post.

If you absolutely need an NSX edge, then you have to basically pre-provision a network and edge then add that as an external network to vCloud Director.  Then it is not aware of what is being done in the NSX manager and doesn't really care.  this creates a situation where you have to manage the configuration of the network from two places (vCD for the IP Pools, NSX for the Edge configuration).
