Mac OS 10.11 and VMware Fusion

Who's going to be the first guinea pig to see if the current version of Fusion will run on El Capitan? (Mac OS X 10.11)  🙂

Yes, yes, I know that VMware doesn't support beta OS versions;  I'm just hoping someone else tests it so I don't have to...

EDIT:  I'm curious to know about both as a Host and as a Guest, either separately or together.

Thanks!

I'm running 10.11 El Cap DP3 on a 2011 Macbook Air (1.8 i7 4GB). VMWare Fusion 6.0.6 seems to be running fine with my Win7 x32. Although I don't really use it with any external devices. Haven't had the FaceTime camera work in it for months, but no major issue.

Not bad give Fusion 6 isn't officially supported on Yosemite either! Although I may upgrade to 7 if they add El Cap support.

I upgraded from 10.10.4 to 10.11 public beta today for the host and after that vmware fusion still seems to run, but all buttons are missing their icons.

Tried to reinstall 7.1.2 of fusion, but same issue. Although, VM:s still seems to work (a small delay to start them up), so it seems to be an cosmetic issue only.

I´ve attached an screenshot of how it looks.

Also interesting is that in "about this mac", El capitan is showing up as "OSX Yosemite, Version 10.11 beta (15A215h)"

I'm having a number of issues on 10.11 Public Beta

  1. If I stop my Windows VM I then can't start it again without rebooting the mac because I get the following error "could not open /dev/vmmon"
  2. It takes a few minutes to start my windows VM
  3. Check for Updates doesn't work reports a certificate error.

I'm getting the following errors in the console when starting Fusion

10/07/2015 15:07:40.800 com.apple.kextd[44]: Failed to load /Applications/VMware Fusion.app/Contents/Library/kexts/VMwareVMCI.kext - (libkern/kext) kext (kmod) start/stop routine failed.

I'm running El Capitan 10.11 Beta as a host. Upgraded this morning. VMWare was working fine, now am experiencing a number of issues.

1) Updates

I'm also getting the error "VM Ware Fusion was unable to check for updates. A certificate error occurred while connecting to the update server...". So cannot do updates at the moment

2) Unity

My Windows 8.1 guest goes into Unity mode, but every window/app I open I just get a white box of the appropriate size. The apps appear fine in single window mode, but as soon as I switch to Unity they are displayed as featureless white windows. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing VMWare Tools, plus various display setting options, enabling/disabling separate Spaces in OSX, but Unity just isn't working.

3) Occasional guest start issues

Sometimes guests won't start at all, especially if I don't let OSX 'settle' after starting up - can't remember the exact error message but something along the lines of cannot access /dev/mmon or something like that. Once it happens again, I will post an update.

4) Windows Guest performance

Once Windows 8.1 is up, it's fine. But it seems to take an age for some of the services to start up, specifically VMWare tools - maybe this is related to (2).

The only one that's causing me pain is (2), as it means I have to work with Windows a little differently. My Linux (Ubuntu) guests seem fine.

Ditto with my Window 7 guest.

At the current time OS X 10.11 Beta is not recommended as a host for Fusion 7.1.2 or earlier. There are several issues which may cause system instability, so use it at your own risk.

If you would like to continue testing the 10.11 Beta, please try the new VMware Fusion Technology Preview 2015‌‌ which was just released. It solves several issues with 10.11:

  • Error "Could not open /dev/vmmon" when starting VMs after quitting and re-launching Fusion. Note that you may still see this if you run Fusion 7 before the Tech Preview. The current solution is to restart the Mac.
  • Delay during VM startup the first time after restarting the Mac.
  • Unity windows displaying all white.
  • Tools installation in 10.11 VMs.

Since the 10.11 Public Beta was released just a few days ago, there may be additional issues which have not been discovered yet.

We look forward to your feedback!

Thanks!

I installed the Technology Preview 2015 and so far, it's working really well. It's fixed most of the issues, and seems to be quite a bit faster. Will keep everyone updated on any issues I find.

The check for updates still shows an error: "A certificate error occurred while connecting to the update server. Check your Internet settings or contact you system administrator."

Are you talking about some kind of "beta" (Technology preview 2015)?

Is it available for download?

Thank you very much for your helpful comment! This helped me a lot.

Everything seams now woking on sleeping and starting the VM, the only problems I am still facing are the missing icons in the virtual machine library and the already posted problem with the connection to the update server. Please keep us informed if you release come new version of technical preview as we not get any notification because of missing connection to the update server.

But thank you again for you helpful post!

I installed the preview on 10.11b3 (15A216g) but I am still getting the issue where the vmmon cannot be found trying to resume this 10.10 guest.  It is stuck in suspended mode and I cannot get it out of it.

Rebooting my Mac seems to have resolved this!

Curious, I downloaded and installed the tech preview and when I check the version installed it's saying "professional version e.x.p 2884851" when I check about vmware fusion.  Is this correct?  Seems odd

Same for me, and I think it's correct. Reading the name of the DMG file that you get when downloading the preview, it says: VMware-Fusion-e.x.p-2884851.dmg.

I am having a problem where Finder loses the ability to figure out what application to use to properly open documents and OS X clipboard break when I launch a VM. It isn't fixed until a host OS reboot. Installed tech preview hoping it would fix. It seemed to at first (uninstalled VMWare Tools in Fusion 7 before installing this). I've gone through multiple iterations with and without VMWare Tools (and about 10 host OS reboots) and tracked the problem down to VMWare Tools. If VMWare tools is not installed, OS X works as expected, but VMWare Fusion is pretty much useless without VMWare Tools facilitating communication between host and guest. And whatever VMWare Tools does to bork OS X isn't undone until a reboot.

I'm running 10.11 15A225F. and Windows 8.1 as guest. I have a support request filed.

Edit: Oh, and is there a timeline on a fix for the wake from sleep/battery drain issues caused if you sleep your laptop and forget to suspend the guest? Because that's been broken for at least two years, possibly longer.

Hi mudaltsov,

I confirm that this preview version of fusion fix the Unity problem you mentionned in your post. Is there any chance that an update will be done on VMware fusion 7.1.x to support el capitan on it or i'll have to purchase a new version when it's out along the OS upgrade?

Thanks in advance for the answer.

Hey all,

I have upgraded my macbook pro late 2013 13" from Yosemite 10.10.5 to 10.11 beta  6, and I have purchased fusion 8 professional.

While I'm still doing tests, everything seems to check out nicely, and I haven't had any issues related to vmware.

In fact, the only current issues i've had with the os x beta are from apps not ready for 10.11 either because they were never updated, or the developer choses to wait for the final release of  the os before publishing an update.

I've been running El Cap as a guest in Fusion since DP1 and Fusion 7 and have been running VMware Tools right along.  I updated to Fusion 8, but ever since El Cap DP8 and now with the GM, I can no longer install VMware Tools - everything else seems to be fine.  It runs through most of the install, but after the "validating" step it says "The installation failed.  The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail.  Contact the manufacturer for assistance."  Any ideas on how to get the Tools install to work again?

I'm still running Fusion 7 and after installing the GM, resolution sank to 1024x768, suggesting a Tools problem. That's happened before and the problem is System Integrity Protection having been turned on by the installation. It needs to be turned off to get a successful Tools install.

To do that, reboot into Recovery mode, open Terminal, and run "csrutil disable". Reboot, install Tools. Reboot again just to make sure it worked (I can tell because I get my resolution back). Reboot again into Recovery mode, run "csrutil enable" and again reboot. Tools should now work properly.
