[Player] VM Storage Size Issue

version=7.1.2 build=build-2780323

on Ubuntu Server 15.04

Hello everyone,

I experience from time to time a strange storage size issue: an error message says that the disk storing the VM is almost full, although:

  • current size: 26.7 GB
  • maximum size: 100 GB
  • system free: 23.3 GB, and my system shows 25 GB are free

Is Player expecting the available space on the disk to be the same as the current size of the VM?

Does anyone know a workaround - besides deleting/moving files from the disk - before that issue is fixed?

Hi,

VMware Player is  correct.

Your disk size is low.

There's 2 reasons here.

You have saved your virtual disk as a single file, as a result for operations such as compact VMware Player needs to have a free disk space as big as your virtual disk.

If you start that and not have sufficient free disk space, you can end up with a destroyed VM.

Another reason is that your virtual RAM is 12GB. On boot of your VM, VMware Player will create a disk file to back that RAM, a file of 12GB in size.

So yes, your disk is low on free space, even while it has > 20 GB free.
