Warning to anyone using an Nvidia card that uses their web driver: Fusion 8.0 with 3D acceleration enabled causes a hard crash. Sometimes it will even freeze the whole Mac.
Hardware Version 12 crashes the VM at boot 100% of the time. Version 11 boots and runs normally but eventually crashes the VM.
Temporary workaround is to disable 3D acceleration.
Hi demigodmac,
Welcome to Fusion community!
We have noticed this problem and thanks for raising the issue to make Fusion better.
Thanks,
Candy
FWIW I don't get this crash on a Mac Pro 4.1 (early 2009) with NVIDIA GT 120 + web drivers. OTOH I don't get the DirectX 10 support either, so something isn't right.
Probably because GT 120's highest OpenGL support is 3.0 and Fusion 8.0 does 3.3
Curious if anyone with Kepler or Maxwell Nvidia cards has the same issue I do.
I run a 970 which I believe is maxwell architecture with nvidia web drivers (346.02.03f01) and do also have this issue.
Also have this issue with a GTX 970 and latest Nvidia web drivers on OS X 10.10.5 - a black screen when I enable 3D acceleration in Windows 10.
GTX780 same issue, with web driver and native drivers....
I submitted a diagnostic package to VMWare Tech support so hopefully they can figure this issue out soon.
I'm curious if those with a Kepler 7xx series card compatible with the built-in OS X Nvidia drivers have the same issue or not?
(my card is a Maxwell series so I cannot test the OS X drivers.)
Just saw this answer - so it affects the native OS X Nvidia drivers too. Can anyone with an Nvidia 7xx equipped iMac or Macbook Pro report if you have the same issue? It could just affect aftermarket cards.
Hi,
Thanks for using Fusion, we are investigating this issue.
Best Regards,
Candy
Just adding to the list. I have an GTX 960 and am experiencing the issue. However, different from the original poster, I experienced the issue even after disabling 3D acceleration. This was on a Windows 10 guest.
For testing purposes, I replaced the GTX 960 with my old GTX 660 and am using the native OS X driver instead of the NVIDIA web driver. No issues after 8 hours of work. This is using Windows 7 with 3D acceleration enabled.
It appears that the 7xx GPUs are impacted as well. I get a hard freeze as soon as the guest OS tools kick in and OS X Yosemite gets a hard hang. Does anyone have an example of what they are seeing in the OS X logs? It looks like some bad calls are being made.
VMWare Tech Support advised we will need to wait until after El Capitan is released before they can begin to work on this issue.
@demigodmac - Thanks for the update demigodmac. Not too long now until the El Capitan launch, so hopefully we'll a get a fix sooner rather than later.
Sorry, I don't accept that as an answer. We should do better.
Can you email me the SR number?
mroy at vmware dot com.
Have you got an update on this? Its a pretty big issue for us as we use fusion within our company and it not playing ball with nvida cards with no ETA at all isnt helping.
Version 8.0.1 does not fix this issue...
I emailed Mikero some details.
That's too bad 8.01 doesn't fix it, but not entirely surprising. We're not exactly typical Mac users.
Yep, still have this issue with El Capitan and Fusion 8.0.1. However, now my Ubuntu Linux VM is affected, so I've to disable 3D acceleration for that too.
