As it seems you are talking about a normal upgrade on Windows 7 (not an update to Windows 10) it sounds more like a non VMware related issue and a Microsoft problem.
Normally there is also a technical reason listed (you can probably find that in the update history) that might help identifying the cause.
Also missing from your information is which update isn't working for you.
The last few updates from Microsoft that I had similar problems with was an update to .NET 4.5.2 (or 4.5.something) as it required the Windows system to have at least over 5GB of free disk space to commit. Could that be your problem?
If not, add more details about your guest OS.
