Will I be able to reserve a copy of Windows 10 using my Windows 8.1 VM?

Hi,

I've managed to get the Windows 10 reservation app to run in my Windows 8.1 VM.

Currently it says Windows 10 can't be installed on this PC because it doesn't have enough RAM (I've assigned the VM 4GB) and also because of the VMware SVGA 3D graphics adapter.

I know that Windows 10 will be freely available upon launch, but will reserving be fixed with a later update or is it best just to wait until Windows 10 gets officially released and then wait for the ensuing Windows 10 compatibility release from VMware?

Thanks, Paul

After a positively Sisyphean ordeal of upgrades, restarts, "bad" product keys (they weren't), dead-ends and failed attempts, I finally got Windows 10 to install.

As others have pointed out, this article finally did the trick:

Tip: download the vanilla "Windows 10" version. I went down a major dead-end trying to get the single-language ISO to install.

i wanted add that i was able to download and install windows 10 by uninstalling vmware tools, installing the OS, then reinstalling the tools.  everything pretty much is functioning at this point with Windows 10, but unity is all jacked up.  it will go into unity, but the windows desktop covers the mac desktop, so you can't see any desktop items.  so, there's still bugs, but it is installable.  fullscreen works fine, and windowed works fine too.

Yah, Unity is all kinds of jacked up... we're working hard on a fix there too.  Unity is really hard to make happen, and Windows 10 changes the way they draw the UI in some pretty fundamental ways. Going forward that will make everyone's lives easier, but for now it's definitely not usable unfortunately.

Ok, here is what I have found so far,  I started over with a clean backup of my original windows 7 Ultimate 64 VM ran the iso installer and everything seems to be working.  I read, the posts about unity breakage, right now, i'm not concerned with that personally, as I don't hardly use it.  I prefer windowed or full screen, because I like the physical windows desktop to be present like it would be on a physical computer.  What broke activation for me seems to be when i changed the VM Type to windows 10 x64 from Windows 7x64.  Not sure if this is normal or a bug, but i thought I'd throw it out there.  Leaving it as windows 7x64 doesn't seem to affect runtime. should it ? or am i ok leaving it?

I found this blog post today: Discover Windows 10 on your Windows or Linux PC today using VMware Workstation 11 with 10% off and a...

I tried to reply to it, asking when there might be an update to VMWare Workstation 11 to allow updates, but the comments section is down for "Temporary Maintenance", so I can't make comments. I still see the problem with the VMWare SVGA 3D driver causing me to be unable to reserve an update for the machine.

Just wanted to share my experience installing and activating Windows 10 on VMware Fusion 7.1.2. I first registered to update to Windows 10 from a Windows 8.1 VM today. I followed the steps as described in this discussion thread. I then tried to manually activate Windows 10 but I kept getting errors (0xC004F034). I then reverted back to Windows 8.1 and downloaded the ISO from Microsoft. setup64.exe was then executed from the ISO. Once I got Windows 10 up and running, I tried manually activating Windows. Once again, it failed.

I uninstalled some programs that didn't seem to work with Windows 10. These programs included an old version of Spybot. Norton Security was also updated to the most current version. I was also prompted to verify changes to my Microsoft account (I had changed something). I rebooted and took a break. When I logged in, I checked the status of my activation and it was activated. I also used the command line utility 'slmgr /dlv' to check the license status and it said that Windows 10 was activated.

I may have done unnecessary steps above but luckily the install was activated eventually. I'm not sure what happened. It's possible that the activation just took some time or that I had to put the install in a similar state as Windows 8.x to be activated. VMware Tools was also installed.

The activation servers are getting hammered today.  If you aren't getting activated and getting errors about invalid product keys, just give it time.  Some people are getting lucking and getting activated right away, I had to manually run activate a few dozen times (a few here and a few there) before it finally connected and activated.

I installed with no problems via ISO - just took a while for activation to actually work.  DO NOT do a clean install until after you get activated.

According to Microsoft there is no Windows 10 product key given for upgrades, and you should just skip the product key page for a clean install.

Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool - Windows Help

Note

  • If you upgraded to Windows 10 on this PC by taking advantage of the free upgrade offer and successfully activated Windows 10 on this PC in the past, you won't have a Windows 10 product key, and you can skip the product key page by selecting the Skip button. Your PC will activate online automatically so long as the same edition of Windows 10 was successfully activated on this PC by using the free Windows 10 upgrade offer.

I was able to reserve a copy of Win 10 in a vmware fusion windows 7 ultimate VM but because of the drive issue I used the windows 10 english iso 64 bit download from Microsoft  to upgrade.  I assume this is also covered in the free upgrade so if i wanted to start  a clean VM i would be able to activate in that matter mentioned above since it will be another fusion VM.  Correct ?

I answered my own  question, that didn't work on a clean install, however, I used my Microsoft account instead of one of the windows 7 accounts and the metro app problem went away, and things are working now.  So got rid of the old unused accounts now.  Will add new user4s later if needed, which should use window 10's defaults for the user accounts.

The other thing is, I upgraded from windows 7 instead of 8/8.1 so i'm not sure if there is a real difference there.

Lastly, If I haven't already confirm that I was able to change the VM OS from windows 7 to windows 10 in the VM general settings without breaking activation.  What I will say is, it seems to require vmware tools to be removed and reinstalled though. as video stops working and the res is stuck low.

The other question is, has anyone had drag and drop stop working ? it doesn't seem to work in windows 10 even with tools reinstalled.  Everything i need seems to work though.

ok, so i gave parallels a shot last night with my vm.  coherence (unity in vmware) works just fine in parallels.  Smiley Sad  vmware has always seemed to be ahead of parallels.  this sucks.

Hi all,

I have no issues. Did not worry about the reservation process. I created a USB install and used that on my 8.1 vm running Fusion 7.1.2. After the update you need to make sure you change the Virtual Machine settings to be Windows 10 and change the display settings to give the recommended 1024MB shared memory. Restart and then reinstall VMware tools. I have all supported resolutions of my MBP now available in Win 10.

Hope this helps.

Hey there,

I just tested Unity  with my windows 10 VM, what seems to happen is in unity mode it think windows explorer should be showing .  it shows the desktop in an an explorer window.  The task bar icons still show up, I didn't try the applications menu because like i said I don't use Unity hardly ever because i want the full OS experience like it would be on a physical computer.  With that said, I  think unity is working correctly, but because3  how windows 10 manages the desktop, it confuses unity into thinking applications should be shown that  really shouldn't because it's different  then traditional windows.  Windows 8/8.1 were different because the live tiles and  desktop weren't combined into one  interface e.g. it didn't have a separate desktop vs tablet mode it was the same on all devices.  So it looks like fusion simply needs to be updated to take that into account.
