In my answer there I recommended what you have posted which does "Annotations".

So if you really want "Annotations" that should work, but I think in the other community it was either asking for "Tags" which is a separate entity in the vSphere api and is not supported by custom property as of yet, there are feature requests pending.
If you really want tags, I'm uncertain of any way other than workflow or a powershell integration as implied by the other community.
