VMware Fusion has encountered an error and has shut down Windows.

Hello,

I've seen a few other threads about this issue but none of the fixes I've found are working for me. Was 7.1.1 supposed to fix this issue?  This is now happening daily with my Windows 8.1 VM and killing my work flow. This may be similar to this thread Re: VMware Fusion has encountered an error and has shut down Windows. but none of the details there helped solve my issue.

I have tried the following to correct the issue with no success:

  • Deleting and the .lck and .vmss files after a crash
  • Verifying the checkpoint.vmState = "" in the .vmx file
  • Modifying the VM power settings.

Another strange thing that appears to be related is that my Macbook 15 Retina (Early 2013) reported that it was out or nearly out of disk space after one of these crashes. Upon cleaning up the .lck files and restarting the system, the disk space was back to the 135 GB free. Now as these VM Fusion crashes increase, the disk space seems to be shrinking.

I am also not able to power off or shut down the VM, I have to Force Quit the Fusion to close the VM. Weirdly or maybe I'm missing something, when I hold down the Option (Alt) key as suggested on the following page, I see the Power Off instead of Force Shut Down but I'm running 7.1.2? Is this page wrong or is there some other reason this is occurring?

VMware KB: Forcing a virtual machine to power off in VMware Fusion

One of the entries I see in the log file prior to the crash is:

Hi ,

It looks like at the time when when this issue occurred, file descriptor limit had reached on the system.

Normally under such circumstances simple restart of the Mac should help.

Can you give list of all 3rd party applications ( exclude default Mac apps )  that are installed on the system?

or, If you are comfortable running commands in terminal, please run following

ls  /Applications > ~/Desktop/applist.txt

Please send the applist.txt file that gets created on your dekstop

Cheers! Avanish
