HP Proliant Dl160 G6 extra noise appeared

Hi there guys! I am not really sure if this is the right place for this kind of question, but excuse me if it is not.

Yestarday i've bought an HP Proliant Dl160 G6.

For the first time i've connect it to the power supply it started by it self.

In the first one minute while it was loading the server was a bit noisy but after it loaded it, the server became very silent. On the same time when it gave an signal to the monitor connected to the server, the server became really silent.

Today i've shutted down the server from the vSphere cliend and i've disconnected the server from this room and connected it into another.

But strangelly today when i start the server again it became even louder when it loaded everything and started the signal to the monitor.

What can be the reason for that when there is anything else different from yesterday. The server does not have any extra pressure from the same that it has yesterday, what can be the reason and how i can make my server quiet like it was ?

Thanks in advance!

Well. This is quite normal. As its is RACK Mounted and having around 8-12 fans normally. Once the server boots first time its checks all the components including (All cards, ports, Fans etc. ) during POST. Thats the reason of loudness

Once all components checked the fan's adjust there speed and more quiter.

So this is not any issue. Smiley Wink

I am not quite sure, because the server worked different yesterday.
How i can make it work again quiet like it was. Does HP Proliant DL160 G6 has any imporant sequence on the power on button, because sometimes i does not start when i press it once and i have to press it repeatedly to make the server start/power on.

Thanks!

I have experienced similar things sometime back, it was just simple activity of upgrading RAM in the HP box, while closing it, something didn't fit properly and server became extremely noisy, it was continuous noise.

Had to open the box again and made sure that all the covers fitted properly. all was well after that.

in your case, as you said you physically moved it from one place to another place, I would suggest if it remains too noisy then worth checking something at hardware assembly level.

Orange light Shows : Power > means something worng with your power supply. must check this first.

2nd (green)& 3rd (off) is for NIC > means you connected lan in 1st NIC card 2nd one is disconnected or disabled.

4th one is for DISK> if anything goes wrong with the diskarray this light will blink. I believe you have led with all of your disk saparately too.which confirms the particular disk health status.

and the the BIG Power button > show the current status of server . On/off.

and the extreme left UID :for idetification of servers :  suppose you have 10 server in rack, you operate someone in front of rack,if you want to operate the same server in back of rack, just press UID button, the front and reae light is lights up t, avoid do something wrong.

What do you mean by problem with the power supply ? When i start the server for the first like 10 seconds it is green, and after that is starts to fade in and fade out with orange light.
The server is running, what kind of problems with the power supply may i have ?

Thanks in advance!

The Health LED might light up amber because your chassis is open on your picture.

The cooling inside the chassis is a closed system not working correctly if the chassis is not closed.

You can see in iLo system log what exactly is wrong.

Reudant Fan Configuration. One Fan Failure or Missing <- I got this error, can this be the problem for this strangely loud server today ?

Thanks in advance!

You find the logs on the webinterface of your iLo card if you have one built-in.

This is usually connected via a spearate network port, but with a Gen6 server this port might be a shared one.

I would first go to HP support for your server model and download all documentation for your server and read that.

That's possible. Check if all fans are plugged in/connected properly and do not run the server with an open chassis for a longer time.

Can you see something wrong?

The server was started for a little bit without the coverings, can this be the main problem ?

Any suggestions other ?

How i can fix this error all fans seems connected!

At least I can't diagnose this from pictures. Check which fan is not running. You can clear off the amber light if this is from running with open chassis on the iLo. Any error could be marked as solved there usually.

But if really a fan is broken you can clear it off only by swapping the broken fan. Or just ignore the light as long as it's not red.

And for the iLo network port you may check rear side of server on the top roughly in the middle. See quickspecs of DL160 Gen6: HP ProLiant DL160 Generation 6 (QuickSpecs/c04286583.pdf)

I have found the problem, one of the cable holders was stucked into one of the fans. you can see it in the pictures. Now everything is fine!
